Our Home For Exchange

Description of the home we are offering for exchange

In the oldest part of a traditional Cretan village, tucked away in the little alleys, far away from the beaten tourist track, we offer our renovated stone house. The house is about 220sqm, divided over the main house and the adjacent little guest house, which are connected by an inside door, but each have their own entrance. Main house: ground floor: fully equipped modern kitchen with Miele appliances, spacious dining room with fireplace, bedroom with en-suite bathroom (bath tub and separate toilet). Small patio with mandarine tree en BBQ, surrounded by stone wall. First floor: spacious living room with fireplace, master bedroom with en-suite bathroom (shower and separate toilet). Plenty of closet space. Exit to the front roof terrace. Staircase leading to a 2nd floor mezzanine, which has a kitchen corner and office space. Exit from the mezzanine onto the spacious back roof terrace, with nice view on the mountains. Guesthouse: ground floor: living space with kitchen corner and separate bathroom (shower and toilet); first floor: spacious bedroom with office corner and separate toilet & washbasin. The house sleeps 6 people in 3 bedrooms, another 4 can sleep on comfortables sleeping couches in the living rooms of main house and guesthouse. There is privacy between main house and guesthouse, however privacy within each house is somewhat limited, as the wooden floors don't provide perfect sound isolation. All modern amenities are present (internet & wifi, TV with Netflix subscription, Sonos sound system, central heating all round and air conditioning in the bedrooms...)

So is it the right pick for you..? Our house has plenty of charm and offers a perfect opportunity to experience true village life among the Cretans for a few days or weeks. But it's probably not for everyone: typical village life comes with downsides as well as upsides. Dogs may be barking, children may be playing down the street, neighbours may be chatting on their balconies. Every now and then, a village feast will leave you with little other option than to party along (unless you're a heavy sleeper...). Don't get me wrong: most of the time (particularly at night and during siesta), it's actually very quiet. But this is a house in the middle of the village, not a secluded villa...

The village itself, Kato Asites, has about 1100 inhabitants and offers most essentials amenities: two taverna's (Earino is a very nice restaurant up the hill), two souvlaki shops and several traditional pubs on the village square, a pharmacist, hair dresser, several grocery stores and butcher. It's probably not the ideal spot for a beach holiday, as it's about 25km from the coast (even if some of Crete's best beaches are less than an hour away). But it's only a short drive (<30') to Heraklion, Crete's bustling capital with plenty of options for dining and entertainment. And Asites' location on the eastern slopes of the Psiloritis, Crete's highest mountain, makes it also perfect for exploring nature and getting away from it all. At the same time, the Malevizi region that the village is part of, is home to some of the best wineries in Crete. As we're pretty much in the middle of Crete, the house is actually an excellent base camp for day trips that will allow you to discover a fair part of the island. Heraklion harbour and airport are at half an hour drive.

We have a cleaning lady who can help take care of the house during your stay, and friendly English-speaking neighbours who will help you out any way they can. If you have any further questions, please feel to reach out!
