Many of Newport's famed Gilded Age mansions, Tennis Hall of Fame, Sailing Museum and and automobile museum, as well as downtown and harbor areas are also within easy walking distance. Downtown and nearby areas include many colonial houses and public and religious buildings from the city's 18th-century golden age, such as the fourth-oldest statehouse (1739) and the oldest synagogue (1763) in the country. Unique shops and a variety of restaurants draw visitors to downtown and the adjacent area around the harbor. As a major center for yachting, Newport's harbor is an attraction in itself, with many opportunities for on- and off-the-water exploration. Newport's Ocean Drive is a great option for driving or biking excursions. Nature preserves on and off the island provide opportunities for walks and bird-watching. Boston, New York, and other New England/northeast destinations are easily accessible for day or overnight trips.
