Comfortable home in historic fishing village. (Verenigd Koninkrijk - North Yorkshire - Staithes)

Ons gastenboek

  • Lynn and Chris are experienced home swappers, very friendly and generous! Their house is cosy and has everything you need for a pleasant stay. It's very bright and the sun shines through from morning to night. There are lots of clear explanations on how to use the appliances and other things in the house. Lynn and Chris's house is located at the top of the village of Staithes, a lovely fishing village nestling in the cliffs with a small beach, a harbour, 2 or 3 pubs, restaurants and a few shops. We loved this postcard village so charming that we wanted to go there several times a day. From there, the Cleveland Way (a national footpath that runs for over 100 miles along the cliffs) winds its way through the surrounding villages on foot, a very pleasant way to enjoy tea and excellent cakes in the "tea gardens" recommended by Lynn. We enjoyed the kindness and smiles of the people of North Yorkshire, which we cycled through, sometimes along the coast (with a special mention for the village and beach of Robin Hood's Bay) and sometimes across the wild moorland and its heather. A family holiday with a change of scenery, where you can always find something to do even when the weather is cloudy (but the sun is never far away). When we got home, the house was just as we'd left it, with a kind note and a present waiting for us. Many thanks to you Lynn and Chris for a very successful exchange!

  • Staithes is a great base to explore this part of the North Yorkshire coastline and we enjoyed this visit very much. Chris and Lynn are experienced and generous hosts who made sure that we had everything that we needed for a perfect few days away. Our hosts left us with a lot of information about the local area including notes about places we had never come across before although we have been visiting this area for many years. We were blessed with great weather and enjoyed long walks, and catching up on our reading whilst taking in the glorious local countryside. Chris and Lynn were kind enough to leave us biscuits, cake and wine as gifts which were very welcome and returned our home to us in immaculate order - thank you !

  • Another superb holiday in Staithes !

We had our 5th exchange in Staithes this spring. Yes, we keep coming back to this lovely fishing village. We enjoy the heritage coast with its adventurous beaches and dramatic cliffs, but the inland with the friendly villages and the moors as well. No sheep on the moors this time, they were at the farms lambing. We keep exchanging with the same people, Chris and Lynn Percy, who have become precious friends. Meeting up is a feast, every time again. They are the best exchange partners you can wish : you arrive in an impeccable home and return in your own house, that is impeccable as well. This year Lynn had left us several local cakes to try. We did try them and enjoyed them all. There is always plenty of food available when we arrive, but a supermarket is at walking distance and open 7/7. This year we visited Whitby a couple of times, went seal spotting at Ravenscar, climbed Roseberry topping, enjoyed the beaches, went bird spotting on the moors, visited some villages and their community tea rooms and enjoyed relaxing in Chris's and Lynn's comfortable home. We had a superb holiday again. And, by return, were surprised with a very precious gift…

  • Super Tausch in Staithes - malerischer Ort

  • A holiday to remember, so much beauty and charm!

  • Wonderful place/lovely exchangers

This was our third stay in Chris and Lynn's house and it will not be the last. We love the house, that is always very tidy and clean when we arrive, is very comfortabel and has a marvelous view on Boulby Cliff. We love Lynn and Chris, who are very kind people, very generous, have a lovely sense of humour (and Chris an unseen/unheard talent for languages) and always arrange some way to meet up with us (and that gives us an instant holiday feeling !). And we love Staithes, a quiet village that has quite some visitors in summer but still remains it calm, the walks we can do straight from the house (even go onto the Cleveland way), the sea, the beach with its fossils, the cliffs. This year was the first time we came at the end of June and there were still kitiwakes and swallows nesting on the cliff in the village. We visited Whitby again and brought a 'guitalele' home for our daughter. And of course we went to the moors a couple of time. It is a short drive to arrive at this marvellous open landschape with fantastic views. This time our daughter and boyfriend joined us during a couple days of our stay and we had a nice time together. When we came home, finding our house again very clean and tidy, made our holiday complete, and as a surplus Chris and Lynn had left small presents in several rooms with a letter that gave us clues of where to find them. A real treasure hunt ! Thank you, Lynn and Chris !

  • A perfect home, adorable people !

This was our second exchange with Chris and Lynn Percy and there will follow more swaps in the future. The house is perfectly prepared when you arrive, everything very clean and tidy, lots of information about the house and the neighbourhood, and all contacts we have with Chris and Lynn are always very cordial. We have already met a couple of times now and may say that Chris and Lynn have become friends we like to spend time with every opportunity we have. We also love the beautiful village of Staithes and the North York moors, and have the feeling we could spend a couple of holidays more there to discover the beautiful nature. A home exchange is only perfect when you come home and hear your partners had a good holiday as well ánd when you find your house clean and everything okay. Well, knowing how good Chris and Lynn take care of our house (and of our dog this time as well !) we don't have to worry a second.

  • An exchange that was lovely in every way

The exchange with Chris and Lynn was easy and uncomplicated. Although we didn’t meet, we feel as if we have become friends with Chris and Lynn and hope that one day we will meet. We took the overnight boat from Amsterdam to Newcastle, (thereby saving a lot of driving in England). Entering Newcastle in the morning is something special; we saw several sides of Newcastle at the same time, pleasure, culture ( the baltic centre) and industry, new and derelict. New housing developments built around old docks etc. We then had a late breakfast on the fishermans quay before driving down to Staithes. On arriving in Staithes we immediately felt welcome, the house and really lovely neighbours who were very happy to answer questions and give tips. The house is perfect with everything that one could need and instructions and tips to help operate everything, typically English we started the day with cup of tea in bed, absorbing the spectacular views toward the sea. The House is the top of the hill, offering a lovely walk down into Staithes and still away from the tourists. Staithes is a lovely old fishing/ smuggling village, similar to the famous Robin hoods bay, but not so busy and a great base for trips. In Staithes there are often events, we were lucky enough to experience the lifeboat days ending with fireworks in the Harbour over the sea and boats. The bus stop is about 10 minute walk from the house with buses running every 15minutes) so one way walks are very easy. We met loads of people (Chris and Lynn seem so know everyone) and immediately had interesting conversations. There is so much in the area 2 weeks barely touches the surface. The north of England is full and vary varied. The famous Beamish open air museum and Newcastle (both about one hour by car) are great one day trips. The Rosedale farmers show is a memory to be treasured, with lots of exotic breed and including yellow sheep and sheep with 3 horns. There are lovely long beaches for walking at Saltburn or from Sandsend to Whitby. One quiet days a walk into Staithes, muse in the artist galleries or craft shops, have a coffee or more; and then relax in the wonderful backyard (a small sun trap protected from wind). We came back to a house that had been loved and cared for, all in all an exchange that was lovely in every way, Thank-you so much Lynn and Chris

  • A very special place....

is Staithes in North Yorkshire. A small fishing village nestling at the North Sea coast just below one of Englands highest cliffs Staithes is a good place to explore the Yorkshire coast as well the the North York Moors. Cliff and moor hikes, pittoresque abbeys and busy towns like York and Durham are day trips for the whole family. And then you return to Lynn and Chris' comfortable home and relax with a view to the sea. A perfect house exchange! Thank you.

  • A HIDDEN SECRET IN THE LOVELY ENGLISH COUNTRYSIDE

Dear Lynn and Chris, Staithes really surprised us. Far from massa tourism it is a lovely place to stay. In the middle of the National Park of the North York Moors, and along the Heritage Coast. We enjoyed nature from your front window, where we could see the sea and the cliffs. We had a formidable holiday in your well-organised house, fitted with all the modern conveniences. Within a short drive you can explore the whole region. We walked in the moors, and along the famous Cleveland Way. There is a lot of historical places to explore : old ironmines, old railwaystations with a steamtrain. We visited the villages and towns along the coast, like Whitby, Robin Hood's Bay and Salburn. A daytrip to York is easy to do. You can park there in the Park & Ride parkings, and take the bus to the towncentre. For shoppers there is the Design Outlet Centre ! And for the gourmets : a lot of fine restaurants and tea-rooms. We can recommend your place for everybody. Willy and Lieve

  • We'll come back !

Staithes is a very pittoresque village at the coast. The moors and the countryside are very close and the house was just perfect : in a quiet street, with a wonderful view and everything was perfectly prepared and very tidy. We had a very good contact with Lynn and Chris before, during and after our holiday. We found our house very clean and tidy, and enjoyed the friendship when we met. Yes, we are talking about another exchange with Staithes and these very kind people !

  • A comfortable home from which to enjoy North Yorks

We spent a wonderful two weeks in Chris and Lynn's comfortable home on the North Yorkshire coast. Chris and Lynn are the most considerate, kind and generous exchangers who left us a glorious range of local (and not so local) produce to sample as we wished. Although we didn't request any food as we both have unusual diets, it was great to try out some new items that we hadn't tried previously. The house is well placed for visiting many coastal towns and villages, which is our preference, and numerous others inland. In the home there were ample books, leaflets, hints and tips for where to visit and things to do during our stay. The house is ideally situated midway between the main road and Staithes historic village and harbour with many enjoyable walks from the front door despite the steep access to the old village. We hadn't visited the area before so there were a lot of pleasant surprises in store, although with having walking difficulties we were rather perturbed to find that a lot of beaches were difficult to access down long steep lanes with no arrangement for disabled parking or even for Disabled Blue Badge Holders to be able to drive down and drop off disabled passengers. We visited the Whitby area three times and particularly enjoyed the fish & chips (sadly stolen by a marauding seagull), sightseeing, shopping and easy access beaches too. We visited numerous other beaches beachcombing for fossils and on one day alone came away with over 22 ammonites and other fossils. Sightseeing continued whilst sitting in Chris & Lynn's comfortable lounge with views over the fields to the cliffs where we saw a barn owl, a roe deer and numerous hang-gliders jumping off the nearby Boulby Cliff. All in all a lovely enjoyable two weeks and a great insight into the North Yorkshire area. Highly recommended.
