Bussum is located in Het Gooi which is a slightly hilly area characterised by its green landscape, its historical charm and its villas. Typical of Bussum are the green and spaciously built quarters. These quarters are separated from each other by parks, public gardens and broad avenues. Bussum had a population of 32,646 in 2014 and covered an area of 8.15 km2 (3.15 sq mi). The arrival of a railway line in 1874 made Bussum begin to flourish. Two train stations were built in the town, that still exist today: Naarden-Bussum and Bussum Zuid, both on the connection between Amsterdam and Hilversum. The stations and the road network fostered the town's status as a satellite town of Amsterdam.
