We are an arts- and book-loving Brooklyn family who love to explore culture, food, music, bookstores, and theater in our own backyard and wherever we travel. Dan is a lifelong New Yorker who runs his own publishing firm; Megan is a native Southern Californian and editor who currently works for the New York City Department of Education. Our daughter, Stella, is finishing high school and studying theater. We enjoy cooking at home (a large farmer's market is 2 blocks away) and spend many a summer evening hosting friends for barbecues in our backyard.

Our book-filled apartment is on the ground floor of a 6-floor building in the heart of Prospect Heights; it is quiet and has a large, lovely, private backyard with a wood deck, planters, outdoor furniture, and a gas grill. It is 2 blocks from Prospect Park, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden; with dozens of cafes, restaurants, bakeries, markets and shops a short walk away on Vanderbilt Avenue. Four major subway lines to Manhattan are less than a 10-minute walk from our apartment.
Our 1,100 sq. foot apartment is well-maintained and comfortable, with wood floors throughout. We have a large, open living-dining room with windows overlooking our back deck and leafy trees (in summer). The apartment is at the rear of the building, and although it does not get direct sunlight, it is quiet and stays cooler in the summer. We love to cook, and our open kitchen with granite countertops is well stocked with cooking equipment and all manner of spices, oils, teas, and staples which you are welcome to use. The wood dining table can seat up to 6 people. The master bedroom has a queen-size wood Craftsman bed, a desk, and en-suite bathroom. The second bedroom (belonging to our teenage daughter) has a twin bed; there is an extra mattress. Both bathrooms have tubs and a shower. It is a cozy, comfortable apartment with a mix of mid-century and contemporary wood furniture.
Notable features:
- Kitchen: granite countertops, Bosch dishwasher, Breville espresso maker
- Window air conditioners in all rooms (we won't lie: New York is hot and humid in the summer)
- Washer and dryer in the apartment
- Large, private outdoor space (also ~1,100 square feet) with plants, dining table and seating for 6-8; outdoor sofa and chairs, gas grill, charcoal grill
- A shared, leafy courtyard space with benches
- Our two bicycles are available for your use

Beschrijving van onze buurt en omgeving
Our Prospect Heights neighborhood is a historic district and home to Prospect Park (Brooklyn's "Central Park," designed by Frederick Law Olmsted), the Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, a popular Saturday farmer's market at Grand Army Plaza, and many new restaurants, cafes, bakeries, and locally owned shops. It is a mix of 19th-century brownstone homes and mid-rise apartments built in the 1920s, with the Art Deco-style Brooklyn Central Library and Grand Army Plaza arch anchoring the neighborhood. (The triumphal arch was dedicated in 1892 to honor "The Defenders of the Union" in the U.S. Civil War) In the summer, there are free music concerts in Prospect Park. Two Citibike docking stations (New York's bike-share program) are a block from our apartment. We are a 15-minute walk from Park Slope, a family friendly, leafy historic brownstone district with more restaurants, shops, yoga studios, bookstores, and food shops. The Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) is a 20-minute walk.

Onze tips voor leuke activiteiten en uitjes bij ons in de buurt
On Vanderbilt Avenue, the main or "high" street 10 minutes from our home, you'll find everything from a great supermarket to wine shops, Thai and Mexican food, Italian and French coffee bars, purveyors of local Brooklyn products, gift shops and more. Many interesting Brooklyn neighborhoods are a walk or subway ride away, including Boerum Hill, Brooklyn Heights, and Sunset Park -- which has historic Green-Wood Cemetery and the new Industry City complex on the Brooklyn waterfront.

Wat we graag willen of wat juist niet...
We remove our shoes in the house to keep the floors clean, and would like our guests to do the same. Ours is a quiet building and there are three other apartments on our floor, so we keep the noise level down after 10pm, including in our backyard.
