When our children left home, we decided to do something different as well. So in 2013, we left England and came to live in France. Steve had spent all his working life in the charity sector running various refugee programmes in Thailand and the Sudan and then running a charity which provided educational lessons for safer living. He loves connecting people and since being in France has set up an online forum called The Knowledge Exchange. He has also become an accidental gardener. Sarah teaches English as a Foreign Language for a language school sometimes going to companies to teach their staff. She's really enjoyed getting integrated into the French system. The photo shows us with our children and partners in January 2022 on a walk near our house.

Our barn was renovated in 2015 to Sarah's design and we are really pleased with the result. The left hand front door leads to a hallway with a double bedroom and shower room off it. We sometimes use these two rooms for bed and breakfast as they are a nice self-contained space. The right hand front door leads into the utility room where we can dump dirty shoes and coats and houses the washing machine and freezer. The central living area/kitchen is open plan but partly with a snug area around the woodburner. The central space is the full height of the barn showing off the old beams and we were worried we might be cold in the winter with such a big space but in fact we are toasty warm. The barn is very well insulated and has under floor heating so no nasty cold draughts. Upstairs on the left hand side are two bedrooms (one with twin beds and the other with a sofa bed), the shower room is between them. On the right hand side is the family bathroom and the master bedroom. Views out the windows are of wheat/ maize/ sunflower fields and the pantile roofs of houses in the hamlet. We have a large garden plus vegetable garden and four hens who might enjoy a handful of wheat each day in exchange for an egg or two (assuming they are laying!)
There are forest walks nearby.

Beschrijving van onze buurt en omgeving
Our village of about 20 houses is made up of a mixture of elderly (90+), retirees, young families etc. Everyone is very friendly and will stop and say hello. When we arrived here ten years ago we were the only Brits but now there are a few more but the vast majority of villagers are French. We love living here because it is peaceful with woods nearby where we like to walk but also has a small town nearby so you don't have to drive miles to go to the supermarket or the bakery. If you're feeling energetic you can walk there - takes about 45 minutes. There is also an open air tennis court and swimming pool in the town, but not being very sporty we've never used them although friends have! What we have loved doing in the summer is hiring kayaks on a local river ending up at the chateau of the very picturesque town of Verteuil sur Charente. Further afield are the historic towns of Poitiers, Angouleme and La Rochelle all of which give a great day out. You can also do a day trip to Paris on the train - Sarah loved a recent visit to the Louis Vuitton Fondation seeing the Monet Mitchell exhibition and then wandering through the streets of Paris before catching the train home again.

Onze tips voor leuke activiteiten en uitjes bij ons in de buurt
One of our favourite things to do is to walk into our nearby town of Sauze Vaussais, perhaps a 45 minute walk, have a coffee at Bar de la Tour ( all organic), sit and look at the magazines or visit the current exhibition at the mediatheque and then have a pizza lunch at Chez Tito before setting off home again. Another place we love to visit is Verteuil, a 20 minute drive away, perhaps beginning with a visit to Cave LaRegie and marvelling at his amazing range of wines and spirits, walking round the town and stopping for a coffee at La Senechalerie with its great view of the chateau.
An hour away are the cities of Poitiers and Angouleme which give greater shopping opportunities as well as a bigger variety of restaurants. They are both attractive historic cities and Angouleme has the added interest of murals and trompe l'oeil painted on buildings plus the Museum of Cartoons (Bande Dessinees).
Then there is the beautiful port city of La Rochelle, again an historic city with meandering pedestrianised streets, great restaurants, shops, boat trips and buskers (including Julien who played at our daughter's wedding!). Or a ferry trip to the tiny island of Aix (Ile D'Aix) from Fouras just north of La Rochelle. There are no cars allowed but you can hire bikes on the island which is a fun thing to do.
And of course the city of Cognac is worth a visit to sample the local beverage.

Wat we graag willen of wat juist niet...
It is important for us to find the house clean and tidy at the end of the stay - as you found it. As non-smokers we would request that there is no smoking in the house or grounds. As I have a vegetable patch it would be lovely if a little watering could be undertaken if it is very dry and you are welcome to use the produce (in moderation!).
