Previous to our retirement, we taught Physical Education and were managers in our schools. We were also actively involved in the running and managing of the family stock rearing farm adjacent to our property which has since changed ownership. We now embrace retirement and enjoy the opportunities and experiences which we can pursue.
Our 2 adult sons now live in Melbourne, working in the fresh produce industry at senior managerial level, who we understandably enjoy visiting.
We really enjoy meeting people, exploring new places and 'living the life' in the cultures we find ourselves, so home exchange works very well. We have made so many special friends through Homelink.
The outdoors have a special interest to us and we enjoy the arts, music, history and life in general.

Read More...Eleanor and Billy were the consummate hosts. We coordinated our arrival so that they could pick us up at Glasgow airport and deliver us to their home. We spent two days with Eleanor and Billy and it was such a pleasure to get to know them and become friends. If you love a calm, quiet and pastoral environment in a house on a "wee" road this is the place for you. You are surrounded by rolling green hills dotted with sheep and cattle. The photos depict the house perfectly. Their home is spacious and modern, fully equipped with everything you need, with many windows to gaze through and enjoy the stunning views. It was a treat to look out the windows and see a deer grazing near their pond. The garden is lovely with much foliage and flowers with a daily visit from a beautiful pheasant. Fresh carrots from the vegetable patch were a treat, as well. The nearest large city is Dumfries, about a 20 drive, where there are major grocery stores, petrol, shopping, museums, etc. Castle Douglas is the other good sized town with all the same amenities. We highly recommend stopping in the farm store in Beeswing for a delicious lunch and shopping for beautiful produce, meats, cheese, and baked goods. Immerse yourself in the history, see the beautiful coastline, and enjoy the warmth and humor of the Scots.

Billy and Eleanor are so friendly, generous and hospitable and we had a great time. The house is large with great space and a good garden to explore. We particularly liked seeing the variety of wildlife that inhabited the garden. All the facilities provided were of a high quality and everything you would require in an extensively well equipped kitchen. The wood burning stove was easy to operate and provided additional warmth in the evenings. The family room is bright, spacious and perfect for less cold days with wonderful all round views of the countryside. We were made to feel very welcome and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Dalbeattie. This exchange felt like a home from home and we would highly recommend anyone thinking of coming to this part of Scotland. The location is perfect for lovely coastal and countryside walks and little towns with independent shops.

We did lots of great day-trips: to Glasgow, to Dumfries to do a Robert Burns walking tour, to the Galloway Forest park and to the Mull of Galloway, which was beautiful. Mostly we did local walks, to Rockcliffe and Kircudbright. But you don't even really need to go out: the view from the sun-room was wonderful, and we spent many a happy hour there, sipping hot chocolate. A beautiful home in a beautiful area - thank you Billy and Eleanor for sharing it with us!

Read More...We have enjoyed a wonderful 10 days in this beautiful part of Scotland. We were given a great tour of the lovely house and gardens by Brian, one of Billy and Eleanor’s friends as they were abroad and the communication before and during the exchange has been excellent. We watched the goslings, then the ducklings on the pond, the house martins nesting under the eaves and stunning sunsets in the evenings. The house is in an ideal position to explore pretty local towns such as Castle Douglas and Kirkcudbright and lots of stunning beaches. Seeing the wild Red Kites being fed at Laurieston is a must - truly amazing! The National Trust gardens at Threave were beautiful too and we saw the Ospreys on the nest with their chicks at the nature reserve there. There was much to do locally but we did venture out to the Mull of Galloway to Logan Gardens and they were amazing. The little beaches there are stunning too. These are just some of the highlights. Thank you Eleanor and Billy for sharing your lovely home with us so that we could enjoy this special part of Scotland. Sue and Andy

Beskrivelse av hjemmet vi tilbyr å bytte bort
Our spacious country home, is in an unspoilt and picturesque part of SW Scotland,10 mins drive from the beautiful Solway coast.(www.visitdumfriesandgalloway.co.uk).This region of Scotland is often missed by tourists on their way to the Scottish cities and Highlands, which makes it even more appealing, and is equally spectacular in terms of scenery.
Our home is modern with all amenities and has beautiful views with a large garden to enjoy.
We have 2 living areas and all you need for a comfortable and relaxing stay.
Our area offers many cultural, leisure and wildlife pursuits and nearby we have cycle trails(www.7stanes.gov.uk), many golf courses, hill and coastal walks. Locally there are many sites of historical interest.
Our house has 3 double bedrooms, master with en-suite, and a study with sofa bed.
We have remodelled the kitchen and bathroom, also adding a garden room to enjoy the surrounding views.
Our home has central heating & wood burning stoves.

Beskrivelse av vårt nabolag og området rundt
Our home is rurally situated in a stock rearing farming community. Our neighbours live in surrounding farms and cottages and they are all friendly, easygoing and helpful.
Our property has 11 acres of land and part of this land is a golf practice area of 100 metres. We also have a pond where we can watch wildlife from our living room.
We live 4 miles from the nearest town Dalbeattie( where Cpt Murdoch from the Titanic was born), and 6 miles from Castle Douglas, a larger market town of historical interest.
Dumfries, the main town of our region is 12 miles, a 15 minute drive from our home and our closest rail station is there.
Edinburgh can be reached in an hour by train from Lockerbie, 26 miles away.
Our roads are quiet with few traffic lights, and courteous drivers.
Around our home we have many opportunities to walk, cycle, golf and fish and there is also a gliding club nearby. We are also not far from the picturesque Solway coast and there is horse riding and tennis nearby.

Våre tips til steder å gå og ting å gjøre mens du bor i vårt hjem
Nearby, a 5 min drive from our home is a lovely organic farm shop and cafe which we use frequently. There are many other good farm shops and garden centres also with good cafes nearby.
We have several favourite restaurants, two of which are at the coast, and The Caven's Arms in Dumfries has good pub food.
We have preplanned day trips for our visitors and we know the best places to see depending on your interests as we are tour guides. We enjoy 'showcasing' our region as we are very proud of its qualities, in terms of beauty, the people who live here and things to do and see.
We also like to meet our exchangees so that we can enhance their holiday experience and their time in our home.
The towns in our area offer speciality shops and are interesting in their own right but for 'High St' shopping, Dumfries has some malls and Carlisle in N England is a 30 min train trip from Dumfries and has a good shopping centre easily walkable. It also is friendly and has many historical sites.
