We are the Marian and Ed Callahan. We both retired in 2014 -- Ed from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and Marian from the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Ed was a manager, and Marian a post-conviction attorney. Retirement has been busy and we are now able to engage our wanderlust, and have time for enjoying staying home as well. We have one adult son, Michael, who is 36. Michael lives in Columbia, MD, and will be able to offer any assistance you may need.
Since my son was 10 years old, we have gone on a number of home exchanges. Our first home exchange was to Ireland to see Ed’s mother and dad’s birthplace in Galway and Sligo. We have had over 20 exchanges, and have had a wonderful time every time, and our exchangers have too. Our interests on home exchanges are: sightseeing, history, art. We also enjoy local markets and festivals if any are taking place during our stay. We are looking forward to art museums and the lovely countryside. We like to be independent travelers, with no specific plan in mind.

Thank you Marian and Edward!

Read More...We had a wonderful stay in Marian`s and Ed`s house in Washington DC. Everything was superbly organized. The home is pleasantly located from the city center with easy access by metro. Washington has so much to offer. It is full of history and culture. I have never seen so many museums in one place. Thanks to our exchange partners we had a multitude of proposals where to go and what to see which they had obviously experienced themselves before. We went to the Wolf Trap to watch a great performance of Mama Mia. What a place! We walked the Billy Goat Trail and Shannandoah NP. Unbelievable how close these are to the capital of the US. Most importantly everybody was very friendly and helpful. Quite often we were adressed by people in restaurants or museums who wanted to know where we came from. We always felt welcome. The spirit of homelink is shown here at its best, to share one`s values and culture and let other people participate in one`s "life". We have met friends of our partners who became friends to us too. Wonderful. We wish Marian and Ed health, happiness and many more exchanges in the next 25 years or more.

Våre tips til steder å gå og ting å gjøre mens du bor i vårt hjem
In Frederick, here are a few suggestions for things to do in the area: this region's Civil War history is fabulous – you can visit the Gettysburg Battlefield, the Antietam Battlefield the Monocacy Battlefield and more; Frederick has a great reputation for searching for the right antique; the Weinberg Center provides a rich variety of the performing and visual arts; the area has a number of state parks for those who love the outdoors and want to experience hiking, biking, camping, golfing, and fishing; you may also enjoy setting out to tour local wineries, cross real covered bridges, visit the zoo or follow the Historic National Road; the rolling hills and abundant farmland of the Frederick County countryside, the well-preserved 18th and 19th-century architecture of our historic districts.
In Washington D.C. here are just a few suggestions for things to do in the area: visit the National Gallery of Art, both the old wing and the new, East Wing. THEN, if it’s a weekday, be sure to have lunch at Charlie Palmer’s, 100 Constitution Avenue, a few blocks diagonally across from the East Wing. Order the prix fixe lunch. A fantastic bargain at this quite upscale restaurant, and you might see a famous face or two! The National Gallery has a fine cafeteria inside the building between the two wings. Across the street is the glass house of the Botanic Garden, at the foot of the Capitol. Then, cross over to the sandstone colored Museum of the American Indians. This museum like all federal museums is free of charge. Check the National Gallery’s website for the Sunday afternoon concerts. Free, and the best bargain in town! One evening, grab your blanket or lawn chairs to get to Wolf Trap for a play or concert. It’s a pleasant drive and a lovely national performing arts park. Bring a picnic or buy food there. Take in a play at the Shakespeare Theatre, at the Metro Center subway stop. Across from the “house where Lincoln died” is Ford’s Theatre. Check out Shakespearetheatre.org. See the pandas in the zoo -- Metro subway to Woodley Park. Visit the Phillips Gallery (Dupont Circle Metro) -- a wonderful collection of impressionists and others. Visit Marjorie Merriwether Post’s estate, Hillwood. The estate has a huge collection of French and Russian (pre-Bolshevik) antiques, and lovely gardens and café. www.hillwood.com
Visit Baltimore and the National Aquarium. Restaurants in Baltimore are plentiful. Walk a few blocks to get to Little Italy restaurants. Take in a Baseball game -- the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards.
Visit Monticello (Thomas Jefferson’s house) in Charlottesville.
Visit Mount Vernon (George Washington’s house) in Alexandria.
