Our house is located in Bad Rodach, Upper Franconia, a part of Northern Bavaria in the middle of Germany. The closest international airports are Nürnberg and Frankfurt. Our small town offers a spa (water temperature about 32°C/90°F, hottest spring in northern Bavaria), old city walls inluding the city park and a representative building (18th century). The latter one was the hunting château of the dukes of Coburg, whose most prominent member was Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria.
Coburg (20km distance) was mostly spared by WW II. That's why the city and especially the streets downtown are beautiful. Try the local Bratwurst! at the market place. One major attraction is the Ehrenburg Palace. Nearby you can walk up the hill through the wonderful English Garden to the Veste Coburg, one of the largest castles in Germany which is open to the public and houses museums. Martin Luther also lived there for some time.
But there are also other interesting cities in Upper Franconia, e.g. Kronach(Lucas-Cranach-paintings) and the Plassenburg, a castle in Kulmbach. Wagner fans can easily visit Bayreuth, the city of the Wagner festival. The driving distance to the capital of Franconia, Nuremberg, is about 1 hour.
The UNESCO world heritage town of Bamberg is also pretty close (must-see #1, try a Schlenkerla beer). Another lovely town, Würzburg, shaped by its 30000 students' atmosphere is within a distance of 90 minutes. There you can visist the UNESCO world heritage Residenz (must-see #2), try the famous Frankenwein (Bocksbeutel) and walk over the bridge up to the Festung Marienberg (a fortress again, of course).
The area of the former inner German border (die Mauer) can be visited either by foot (10 minutes) or by car, part of the Thüringer Forest. Up north you can go to Jena and Weimar, home of Goethe and Schiller. There is also the Wartburg Castle (Luther again!)
You can travel from Coburg to Berlin using the high-speed ICE-train (2,5 hours, e.g. starting at 6.44 am and returning at 7.30 pm) or to Munich (about 2 hours travel time).
