We are a retired couple looking for short breaks in Europe at destinations that are a flight from Edinburgh and easy to reach on public transport. We are flexible about dates but prefer Northern Europe in July or August. Occasionally we may need to include our twenty-odd-year-old son in the exchange.

200 Sqm apartment over the top two floors of a historic townhouse in the centre of Edinburgh, with the kitchen and lovely sitting room on the lower level and bedrooms on the upper level. This is a light and airy apartment with wooden floors throughout. The decor is modern but retains period features. The flat has fantastic views to the back over the city and the Forth. To the front, we look over the private Queen Street Garden, to which we have key access.

The apartment is in the heart of the city's Georgian New Town, with its stunning classical architecture and is in one of Edinburgh's most desirable locations. The street is bounded on one side by the beautiful Queen Street Gardens and so is relatively quiet despite its central location. It is within easy walking distance of the historic old town, but also close to riverside walks and the Botanic Gardens. The local area has many excellent food shops, bars and restaurants. The area is well served by public transport and within walking distance of the railway station and the tram stops for the airport. There is a swimming pool nearby, tennis courts, parks and extensive cycle paths. We have three adult bicycles that you can use and lots of games equipment.

Tourist attractions within walking distance include Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile, Dean Village and the Water of Leith, the Botanical Gardens and Carlton Hill.

We have one spare bedroom so prefer one or two guests but, in addition, it might be possible to offer our son's room to an older child or young adult. The apartment is up several flights of steps and there is no lift so access could be challenging for some. Nor is it suitable for younger children.
We don't wear shoes in the house.
