I am retired and I have lived in Harrogate for just over 6 years. This followed 15 years in Edinburgh where we moved to from New York City and Connecticut (32 years). I have just re joined Homelink having been a member and done a number of exchanges prior to 2015. My interests are music, opera, art, theatre and of course travel to enrich the availability of those interests! I chose to move to Harrogate because I was born in Yorkshire, knew the town and it's proximity to stunning and varied countryside. I am a member of Historic Houses, National Trust and the Royal Horticultural Society - RHS Harlow Carr is located in Harrogate. When I do an exchange I sometimes ask a friend to join me.

Beskrivelse av hjemmet vi tilbyr å bytte bort
My apartment is in a Victorian building converted to residential use in 2005 very centrally located in town. It faces south, is sun filled and looks out onto a tree lined street. There are 4 apartments and though mine is on the ground floor there are 8 stone steps up to the 2 entrance doors to the building allowing for an apartment beneath mine with a front patio area. My entrance is into a long hall from front to back of the apartment and each room is entered from the Hall. I have a large sitting room with2 3 big windows, a gas fired fireplace, mixed furniture with some antiques; main bedroom with Queen size bed is compact due to the addition of a large clothes storage unit and shower room by my predecessors, window; small storage area in the Hall with washer/dryer; 2nd bedroom/Den with double size sofa bed, bookshelves, window opposite the main bathroom with bath and overhead shower; kitchen remodelled by the last occupants. This is sort of divided into 2 with the cooking end and the other with country style dining table, 4 chairs and my built in wall unit and computer space. There are 2 windows and all this space is open. I have a garage and car which can be made available. There is on street parking and a supermarket, Waitrose very close by. Victoria Avenue is 1 block from The Stray, open grass area which stretches over different parts of the town.

Beskrivelse av vårt nabolag og området rundt
Centrally in town the area is active during the day and quiet at night. It is a very short walk to shopping streets, numerous restaurants, pubs, coffee and tea shops, banks, post office, cinemas, bus and train stations, Carnegie Library, supermarkets. The apartment is on a tree lined street of mainly Victorian buildings; some apartments, businesses such as solicitors, accountants or other small offices. Other attractions in Harrogate - Valley Gardens (12 mins), Mercer Art Gallery and Royal Pump Room (12 mins), Turkish Baths (11 mins), Betty's Tea Rooms (10 mins). These are at fairly brisk walking pace.

Våre tips til steder å gå og ting å gjøre mens du bor i vårt hjem
The elegant town of Harrogate is one of the most beautifully laid out towns in England. Much of it’s Victorian architecture remains intact. With wide open spaces (The Stray stretches over much of central Harrogate), wide tree-lined streets and beautiful parks the town is a pleasant and aesthetically lovely place to live. Among the places of interest in town are: the Valley Gardens, Royal Pump Room Museum, Turkish Baths, Mercer Art Gallery, Royal Hall, Harrogate Theatre, Harrogate Convention Centre and Betty’s Tea Rooms. All these are within a 15 minute walk from my home. In addition there are cinemas, the Carnegie Library, post offices, banks and many, many restaurants of varying types and prices. These, too are a short walk away. We are fortunate to have an RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) garden, Harlow Carr in Harrogate. This has a Betty’s restaurant on site. Harrogate was named ‘the happiest place to live’ in surveys and has won ‘In Bloom’ awards for Yorkshire and England. Flower beds feature throughout the town and of course in the Valley Gardens which has numerous mature trees, a Japanese Garden, walking paths (many dogs here), seating in sun and shade, a small cafe & ice cream kiosk, children’s playground and tennis courts. A half hour walk from the top of the Valley Gardens takes you through the pinewoods to Harlow Carr.
Yorkshire features many ‘dales’ each with it’s own specific scenery. The largest county in England, Yorkshire came into it’s own through TV, not least the series ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ following the life of the vet, James Herriot – set in Swaledale and Wensleydale. The Herriot Museum is in Thirsk. Among towns and cities within easy reach by bus and train are Ripon with it’s beautiful cathedral, Knaresborough, Leeds and York. This ancient city has much to see and enjoy. There are numerous National Trust and Historic Houses properties within reach. One ‘must visit’ is Fountains Abbey/Studley Water Park (National Trust), 10 miles from Harrogate. A former Cistercian monastery the still standing ruins are a stunning sight. There is so much beautiful countryside in Yorkshire which must be explored by car. Another place to visit is the 1853 Gallery in Saltaire near Bradford (closed on Tuesdays). This houses many works of art by David Hockney, who was born in Bradford. The mill was built by Sir Titus Salt in 1853 and the village to house his workers. It is a Unesco World Heritage Site. There are shops and restaurants within the gallery. It is easy to spend a whole day here. There is a large free car park.
I shall have brochures of numerous places to visit and business cards for lots of restaurants in my home for you to use while visiting.
