We are Garry and Wendy. Semi-retired professional couple in our 60's (formerly Australian Public (Civil) Service and for the past 20 years business owners - currently have an online business. Two married sons and 4 grandchildren. No pets. Enjoy family and grandchildren, socialising, bush walks, gardening and travel.
We enjoyed a 6 week tour of the UK in 2016 when our son and his wife were working in London. My wife is a family historian and we mapped an ancestry trail that took us around the UK - starting at Sherborne in Dorset, then Somerset, Wales, Yorkshire, Scotland, Northumberland. Lincolnshire, Sussex and Kent visiting family history centres, old houses where an ancestor once lived and their last know address (the church graveyard). Of course with many tourist stops along the way.
We want to dig a little deeper into the history of two areas and also experience everyday life in the area (as opposed to a few nights in a motel). Between April/May and June/July 2020 we would like to stay in the south west (Dorset, Somerset or Devon) for 3 to 6 weeks and 3 to 6 weeks in Cheshire or West Yorkshire. So we are looking for consecutive house swaps in these areas. Also, between house swaps or at the beginning or end of our UK stay we want a short European reconnaissance to the Loire Valley and Frankfurt for possible house swaps in 2021/22 to explore our French and German connections.

Beskrivelse av hjemmet vi tilbyr å bytte bort
Ours is a modern interpretation of a traditional Australian home with a veranda out front and another at the back. It has 3 bedrooms, a study and two bathrooms. One bedroom is currently set up as a second study, but being a double sized room has plenty of space to setup a single or bunk bed if required (let us know if needed). The main bedroom has a queen size bed, ensuite and walk in robe and the other bedroom is set up as a reading room and has a double sofa bed. There is a formal lounge and dining room and a kitchen/meals area and adjoining family/rumpus room (entertainment system with large DVD, VHS and CD collection and a PlayStation). The laundry has a washing machine. No need for a dryer in sunny Brisbane. It is a split level home with 3 steps from entry and bedrooms level down to living areas and outside veranda and patio, so not wheelchair friendly.
Internet - we have a fast broadband connection with hardwired access from both studies and the entertainment system and WIFI is also available throughout the house and back patio/pool area.
Our house has 24 roof mounted solar panels (generating 6.4kw of electricity), a solar hot water system and the salt water chlorinator for the pool is run from the electricity generated by the solar panels on the roof. It is set by a timer to come on each day and run during daylight hours. The pool will require little if any maintenance by our guest. An inground sprinkler system in the outdoor entertainment area will probably need to be turned on at the tap for a couple of hours each week, unless it happens to rain.

Beskrivelse av vårt nabolag og området rundt
Shailer Park is a suburb of greater Brisbane located between Brisbane and the Gold Coast. It is a hilly area with lots of original vegetation and wildlife - we occasionally see a koala munching on the leaves of one of our eucalypt trees. But despite the country ambiance of the suburb we are located within 5 minutes of a major shopping centre and the M1, a six lane highway connecting Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
Our home in Shailer Park is on a ridge with views from the front of the house south towards Mt Tamborine and from the back of the house we look over the tree tops (and neighbouring rooftops which are largely hidden from view) - sitting on just under 1/2 acre of land it is very private.

Visit us in Winter - Beautiful one day, perfect the next. Our winter (northern summer) is the best time of the year to visit Queensland and avoid the summer heat (in both Australia and in Europe - 42.6°C in Paris!). In July 2019 daily maximum temperatures in Brisbane ranged from 19°C to 26°C, which is similar to London July average, but with many more dry sunny days and low humidity. Go for a swim - sea temperatures at Surfers Paradise (40 minutes on M1) in July averages 21.7°C (24.2°C in May)
Our home is located 5 minutes from the M1 which links Brisbane and the Gold Coast and north to the Sunshine Coast. From our home in Shailer Park, turn right onto the M1 and in 25 minutes you could be in Brisbane City, Southbank Cultural centre with its live theatres, museum, art gallery, restaurants and gardens on the banks of the Brisbane River, or the Treasury Casino, or turn south on the M1 and in 20 minutes you will be passing Dreamworld, Movie World and Wet n Wild and in 40 minutes you are on the sand at Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast to check the water temperature and find it is just about perfect. You can visit the Star Casino or any of the other attractions in Australia's premier tourist destination. All easily accessed by car from our home, but far enough away not to intrude when you want some peace and quiet.
We are located 20 minutes from Moreton Bay - the Redland Bay pub is a favoured venue for lunch sited on a rise overlooking the sparkling waters of the Bay and it offers alfresco dining with good food at reasonable prices. Stradbroke Island is a short ferry ride away. Our local pub, Fitzy's, is 5 minutes away by car (or 15 minute walk) and serves traditional Australian pub food and cold beers. The adjacent Logan Hyperdome is a large shopping mall with three major grocery retailers, medical centre, and a variety of small stores, a food court, cinema complex and public library. Mt Tamborine in the Gold Coast hinterland has cool rain forest walks, fine dining and magnificent views of the Gold Coast skyline and is only a 50 minute picturesque drive away. A great fishing spot on the Logan River which flows into Moreton Bay is a 10 minute drive away from our home (you can use my rod and reel). Golfers are well catered for with the nearest golf course a 9 minute drive away and a total of 5 golf courses within a 15 minute drive. Doctors, dentists and a large hospital all within 5 - 15 minute drive. Free community tennis courts, football fields, cricket nets and parkland all within 5 minutes drive. Australia Zoo is 80 minutes away by car and Noosa is 2 hours. Byron Bay is 1 hour 35 minutes south.
Getting around
Like many places in Australia, you need a car to get around and visit places of interest. We offer a 2.0 litre Kia Cerato automatic 4 door sedan as part of a house swap. There is a bus interchange at the Logan Hyperdome (15 minute walk) where you catch a bus into Brisbane City. The nearest railway station at Loganlea is a 15 minute drive from our place and connects Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
Hva vi liker, hva vi ikke liker ... Her er våre preferanser og husordensregler.
We adhere to the golden rule - "We treat other people (and their possessions) how we would like them to treat us" - which basically means leave the place as you find it.
