We were fortunate to stay in both the homes of Francois and Fatima in Lisbon and on the island of Fayal in the Azores. Both homes were special in very different ways, a luxurious and very spacious apartment in a good area of Lisbon and a small, rustic cottage in a village a few miles from Horta, the capital, on the green island of Fayal. We spent longer on Fayal than in Lisbon, a city whose charms are well know. We knew nothing of the Azores but instead of barren rocks we were enchanted by green field and woods, spectacular dormant(?) volcanoes, great food in hearty portions and friendly if rather shy but English speaking islanders. If you are looking to unwind, to walk to be surrounded by hydrangeas of all colours wherever you go, Fayal is the place for you. The cottage is very comfortable for two people but would be a squeeze for any more unless they were very good friends and the galley kitchen is OK for simple meals. Do book your car rental at Fayal airport well in advance, though as a car is essential to explore the island.Don’t, as we did, miss your flight to Fayal as the local airline, SATA is unsympathetic and you may get stuck in Lisbon or another Azores island.for some days. Thank you Francois and Fatima for all the help and introductions and for making our stay so special. John and Shireen
