We are retired professionals. I was an Accounting Lecturer and Jayne was a midwife. We love travel and finding interesting places with great food, coffee and cultural attractions. Both our children recently lived and worked in Bristol in the UK. We were living in the South of France (during Covid) but currently back in Australia. Our house in Montreal France will be available as of 2024 for rent or exchange, either simultaneous or non-simultaneous.

Cosy living area with extendable dining table. Fully equipped kitchen for self catering. View north across rooftops to historic St. Vincente Collegiate Church. Montreal is a hilltop market town in Aude. 15 minutes by car to of bustling Carcassonne and the famous C12th Cite. 45 minutes to Toulouse. One hour to Foix in the Pyrenees foothills. Some fabulous markets are all within 30 minutes drive in Mirepoix, Castelnaudary, Carcassonne, Bram, Revel. Just over an hour to cosmopolitan and chic Narbonne with fantastic shopping in its historical centre, close to the Mediterranean. The Canal du Midi flows through nearby Carcassonne and Castelnaudary with boat hires for any duration. The region is famous for vinyards (specialty is Merlot) and sunflowers. It has a rich history as a centre of the Cathar rebellion in the C13th. The local St. Vincente Collegiate Church was the scene of a debate between the Catholics and Cathars 800 years ago. There are many Cathar ruins that dot the area, all within short half day drives.
Montreal itself has a permanent population of around 2000 and this figure has been consistent for the past 3 centuries. It's pedestrian heart is ancient but it also has all modern conveniences including petrol station, convenience stores, cafes, bars, restaurants, motor repairers, pharmacies, patisseries etc. There is a supermarket 5 minutes away in Bram. Montreal also has a school, a police station a fire brigade tennis court and communal swimming pool, walking distance from the house. It can get quite busy at peak times on work days but could best be described as 'sleepy'.

Descrizione del vicinato e dei paraggi
Montreal is a village centrally located in a vibrant region of South France near the Pyrenees. Its is a small village with most conveniences nearby the house (walking distance) but close to major regional centres like Carcassonne and Narbonne. From near the centre of town (close to the church) there are stunning 360 deg views of the region. Most of the town is pedestrian, which enhances its charm, however there is free parking in the small square in front of the house, which is an added bonus to those arriving by car. Great walks abound around and within the town. Beyond the lake on the hill behind, there are wonderful photogenic views of the town of Montreal, which is topped by the church and its bell tower.

I nostri consigli su cosa non perdere in questa zona
Some excellent local restaurants, bars and cafes, all within walking distance of the house. Walking around the narrow streets of the old part of town is a treat. Have your camera ready! Enjoy lazy afternoons in the house or outside in the private courtyard, both with wonderful views south to the Pyrenees.
