I am an active, retired, British woman. Before retirement I worked for the British Council in Education and the Arts in the UK, Japan, Indonesia, Romania, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Nigeria, India and Poland. My first degree was in Fine Art (sculpture), I later studied textiles in India for two years and then spent ten years as a weaver in the UK. I particularly enjoy travel, trekking, yoga, the arts, crafts and keeping up with current affairs.

We loved the outside shower at Sue's place & the daybed on the beautiful terrace with plants & very good smelling flowers! Thanks to Sue's information notes we found a very good driver to bring us safely to places of interest. We especially liked the visit to the rice terraces, the Luwak coffee plantation, monkey forest, Ubud, so many beautiful temples! Certainly recommended are Pura Tanah Lot, Pura Ulu Watu, Pura Taman Kemude Saraswati… Along the Sanur beach we even visited the museum Le Mayeur, a Belgian painter. Always warm weather in Bali, something we can't promise Sue when she will be coming to Belgium, but we do have a lot to offer instead!

We enjoyed walks along the beach, swimming, eating and drinking local food, and longer trips around Bali. Sue had everything prepared for the Exchange and we are very appreciative of that. Communication between us before, during and after the exchange was effortless and helpful. We would wholeheartedly recommend her home. We hope we can exchange again with you Sue. Thanks for everything. John and Shireen Weston.

Descrizione della casa che offriamo
My home is a medium-sized (185 sq.metres), unique, modern with traditional touches, light, top/first floor apartment five minutes from Mertasari beach in the traditional tourist resort of Sanur, Bali, Indonesia. It has a large terrace surrounded by a pretty garden of palms and potted plants. There is a 'Bale', a traditional thatched day bed, on the terrace, where you can completely relax. I call my apartment "Nest in the Trees" because it is surrounded by trees providing a lovely view and privacy. The living room, dining room, bar area and kitchen are open-plan, leading on to the terrace through a wall of sliding glass doors so that the terrace feels as if it is an extension of the light, open-plan area. There are two ensuite bedrooms: the main one has a large double bed (180cm wide) and the second one can either be a double bed (160cm wide) or two singles (80cm wide each). Both have ensuite bathrooms with showers. Both bedrooms have security boxes to store valuables. The kitchen has two adjoining parts, one where I prepare and serve food and drinks and the other where I cook and wash dishes. The building materials throughout are a mixture of modern (glass, aluminium, ceramic tiles) and traditional (coconut wood, slate, bamboo). There is air-conditioning and ceiling fans throughout. I have my own private entrance on the ground floor leading into an area where I keep my bicycle. There are fifteen steps up to my apartment from the ground floor. I would like to return to the UK for 6-7 months, I would be happy to consider either one long exchange or several exchanges in different places, preferably for at least a month each. I am particularly interested in some exchanges being in Devon, London and Yorkshire where I have friends and family, but I would also welcome exchanges in different places in UK, to explore and have new experiences.

Descrizione del vicinato e dei paraggi
Bali is an island in Indonesia. It is a mainly Hindu island in mainly Moslem Indonesia. Sanur, where I live, used to be a small fishing village, which has now developed into a popular, upmarket tourist resort but still retains traditional Balinese characteristics. Balinese culture is very rich in art, music, theatre, dance and religious ceremonies. Ubud, in the centre of Bali, is the main arts centre and can be reached from Sanur in 45-60 minutes by road. There are Bali seaside resorts, such as Kuta and Legion, that are mainly for young surfing, party-loving holidaymakers. Sanur is popular with people of all ages, who prefer a quieter life and families with young children. The sea, which is five minutes walk from my apartment, is calm and safe. My apartment is not right in the centre of town, but is very close. It takes around five minutes by car/taxi, ten minutes by bicycle and twenty minutes on foot to the centre. However, you do not have to leave the immediate vicinity of my apartment for restaurants, cafes, shops, the sea and beach, health and sports facilities. There are supermarkets and a deIicatessen in Sanur where you can buy every kind of food you may want. As I said previously I call my apartment "Nest in the Trees" because it is surrounded by trees and is quiet and private. There is a small, quiet road between the Mercure Hotel and my apartment, which is set back from the road, where you can pick up taxis or bemos (cheap local transport). There are many local car, motor-bike and bicycle hire businesses in Sanur. You can catch buses to other parts of Bali and boats to other small neighbouring islands from Sanur.

I nostri consigli su cosa non perdere in questa zona
Bali offers attractions for every interest whether complete relaxation or very adventurous. In Sanur itself there are a variety of excellent restaurants, bars and cafes for every taste. Many offer traditional dance and music performances in the evenings. The sea is a five minute walk from my apartment where you can sunbathe, swim, walk, jog, cycle or take part in water sports. There is a yoga centre on my local beach in the grounds of the Mercure Hotel offering classes every day and many massage spas throughout Sanur. From Sanur you can take day trips around Bali with a hired car and driver or a self-drive car and experience stunning views, sights, temples, religious ceremonies and Balinese people going about their daily lives. You can go jungle and rice-field trekking, climb a volcano, go diving, snorkelling and white-water rafting. You can take half or full day courses such as traditional cookery, dance, batik, painting. You can visit art galleries and museums with both permanent and temporary exhibitions. In Ubud, Neka Museum and Arma Museum are two excellent art museums and Threads of Life is an excellent textile gallery. There is a Bird Park, Elephant Park, Safari Park and Botanical Gardens in Bali. You can buy local art, crafts, textiles in many local shops and markets. Bali is also a good jumping off point for visits to other parts of Indonesia eg. Java, Sumatra , Lombok, Sulawesi, the Gilli Islands, and beyond eg. Singapore, Malaysia, and a good place to stop off en route between Europe and Australia and New Zealand if you are planning a longer journey.

Cosa ci piace, cosa non gradiamo… Ecco le regole in casa nostra.
I would like to be told about all the people who will be staying in my home during an exchange. For example, if the person(s) I have an arrangement with wish to be joined for whole or part of the exchange by additional friends or relatives, I would like to know. The number of people at any one time should not exceed four.
My privacy and feeling of safety are very important to me so I would be grateful if you did not get too friendly with my immediate neighbours, especially by inviting them into my apartment. The main front door downstairs should be locked at all times both when you are at home or out.
I have a small terrace garden. If the exchange takes place during the dry season, April-November, then I would be grateful if you could water my plants as necessary.
Smoking is not allowed inside my home, but is possible outside on the terrace if necessary.
Air conditioning costs can be expensive if the units are left on unnecessarily. Before the exchange takes place I will discuss reasonable A/C costs and agree a 'reasonable use' electricity bill amount. Should this amount be exceeded I will request a contribution to cover the excess.
I have no car but I have a bicycle that you can use for local use in the neighbourhood.
I hope my landline phone will not be used for long distance calls, but should this be necessary, I would ask to be reimbursed for the costs.
A cleaner comes in once a week for six hours to clean the apartment, do the ironing, take care of the garden and water the plants as necessary. Between her visits, you may need to sweep the tiled floors occasionally, and as mentioned before, water the plants during the dry season at least once a week. Alternatively, should you want to, you could make an arrangement with my cleaner to come more often, if she is available.
I am vegetarian, but am happy for meat and fish to be cooked and eaten in my home. However, I would appreciate it if there is no trace of meat or fish when I return.
I would like my apartment to be left clean and tidy on your departure.
