Notre maison

Description de notre maison d'échange

My home is a newly renovated former old country cottage which now has underfloor heating, with a mini stove in the sitting room for extra cosy atmospheric evenings in.(not needed for heating!), an air to water heating system and for the cleanest freshest air I have installed an MVHR system (mechanical ventilation with heat recovery system)....you will never have stale air in my home, lingering cooking smells nor need to open a window after a shower. ...so super safe in the world we live in today, no need to open a window if you have friends over for a cuppa. My home covers 129 square metres...1389square feet.)
Entering the wide bright hallway with tiled floor there are 2 steps to front door, for those with reduced mobility there is a ramp to the back door for easy access.
Off the hallway are the bedrooms, 1 of which is in use as a craft room at present. The master bedroom has a super king size (6ft) bed, a generous ensuite with shower and a large HDMI QLED TV for lazy mornings in bed. ...with all UK & International channels as well as Netflix, Disney & Prime.
The second bedroom has a king size (5ft wide) bed, a free standing mirror and is directly opposite the main bathroom.
The main room takes up the whole length of the house and includes the kitchen, dining & sitting room. It also has a sliding door out onto the driveway and side lawn area...I love being able to cook whilst chatting to family relaxing on my couch. ..with the MVHR I never have to worry about cooking smells lingering or adhering to furnishings. Just sit back, relax and enjoy the 55inch HDMI QLED TV. If the multiple TV channels don't pique your interest I have numerous video cds which you may enjoy whilst relaxing with a glass of wine. Keep in contact with the outside world by using my high speed broadband, not always available in Ireland.
On sunny days enjoy the patio outside the back door, watch the birds nest building, or the lambs playing in the fields adjoining my garden, or perhaps keep my automower in sight as it mowes my lawn!!! .with electric gates, house alarm and outdoor cameras you can relax knowing your car and possessions are safe and secure day and night.

Quartier

Description de notre quartier et ses alentours

Welcome to the beautiful heart of Ireland's hidden heartlands!, to my newly renovated eco friendly 3 bedroomed bungalow with a large garden just 1 mile from Ballyjamesduff town in County Cavan. I live in a semi-rural area, with close neighbours who will happily lend a hand should the need arise.
Ballyjamesduff has several hairdressers, banks, pharmacies, grocery shops, pubs,(serve food), electrical stores and take-aways. There is an outdoor market on a Saturday, where you can purchase locally, Irish made items to bring home as reminders of this unique part of Ireland. There is also a fresh fish van selling the best tasting Irish fish straight from the boats in Killybegs Donegal....
There are lovely country lane walks right from my door, or pop into the local village a few minutes away for a pint and a meal...there are several pub restaurants to choose from...
Cavan is an amazing county, blessed with many lakes, a true anglers paradise....its my adopted home, so I am still exploring it having only moved here at the beginning of the first lockdown at end March 2020.
..I'm truly at the centre of Ireland which means I can be in Dublin city centre in just over 1hr 30 minutes.(think G.P.O., The Irish Emmigration Museum, Kilmainhan Gaol, etc)...in Belfast in 2hrs (think the Titanic Experience, The Giants Causeway etc) or maybe you prefer a journey back 5,200 years ago with a visit to the passage tomb at Newgrange Co. Meath?..which is older than Stonehenge in the UK and the pyramids of Giza. You can be there in just 65 minutes!!
If you fancy some time in the West of Ireland on the Wild Atlantic Way...then in less than 2 hrs you can be on the blue flag beach at Rosses Point Sligo looking towards Benbulben mountain and exploring Lissadel house and all the places mentioned by W.B.Yeats in his poetry.....15minutes more brings you to the surfing capital of the world...Mullaghmore..a short drive further north you will be enjoying the beautiful scenery of Donegal. Cavan is the hidden heart of Ireland.

A Faire

Nos conseils pour des restaurants, cafés, shopping et activitiés à ne pas manquer

If you want to start your day in the early 1900s, WW1/1916 Rising visit (WW1/10(http://www.cavanmuseum.ie/) just a few miles away in Ballyjamesduff...then become part of 3000BC, at loughcrew, within 15kms, about 25minutes drive, (https://heritageireland.ie/places-to-visit/loughcrew-cairns/) and finish your day sampling amazing local food, (www.riverfront.ie) ...then my home is the place to be.
If learning a traditional Irish craft (knit socks, spin wool) is something you think you might like to experience....less than 20 minutes drive..( www.craftsofireland.ie/product-category/workshops/)....I mean why just watch a demonstration when you can actually learn how to do it? then let my home be your base.
If golf is on your wish list you won't be disappointed....perhaps challenge yourself at the PGA National Ireland Slieve Russell golf course? or 2 other courses within 20 minutes drive.(Virginia & Cavan)....even better there is an 18 hole course less than 10 minutes drive from my home, (1 round only €15 per person), 18 holes a bit much, then 9 holes is also available at the Crover House Hotel...booking available online.
How about a walk? There are so many places to have a great walk, either easy or challenging....check out some of the websites below.
www.thisiscavan.ie
www.discoverireland.ie
www.cavanburrenpark.ie/visit/trails

However, why not venture an little further afield to the famous Phoenix Park Dublin..www.phoenixpark.ie. The Phoenix Park is one of the largest enclosed public parks in any capital city in Europe....It was originally formed as a royal hunting Park in the 1660s and opened to the public in 1747. A large herd of fallow deer still remain to this day. The Park is also home to the Zoological Gardens, Áras an Uachtaráin, (that's where the President of Ireland lives) and Victorian flower gardens. The Phoenix Park is only a mile and a half from O’Connell Street.
Also you should not miss a visit to the National Botantic gardens in Glasnevin Dublin .....Check out https://botanicgardens.ie/glasnevin/glasshouses/
During the current COVID restrictions (edited September 2021), they are pleased to welcome visitors to the Gardens, from 10am to 5pm on weekdays and 10am to 6pm on Saturdays, Sundays, and Bank Holidays (Glasnevin), and 9am to 5pm (Kilmacurragh), Monday to Friday, weekends, and bank holidays.
.in just over an hour you can be there....The Turner Curvilinear Range and the Great Palm House are both recipients of the Europa Nostra Award for excellence in conservation architecture. The glasshouses are open every day throughout the year except for Christmas Day, and are completely free to enter and explore. They are truly spectacular to see. Interpretative guided tours are available. Check out https://botanicgardens.ie/glasnevin/glasshouses/

As Cavan county is known for its lakes I recommended to try your hand at angling whilst you are here. For more information check out
https://www.croverhouse.ie/angling-lough-sheelin/..less than 10 minutes from my house...first time?, no problem, why not hire a gillie?...the Crover house team can sort everything out for you. Also check out www.fisheriesireland.ie for more information. Season stretches from March 1st to October 12th.
History is everywhere..a few minutes walk from my house is a monument celebrating Marcus Daly..a native of Derrylea Ballyjamesduff who emigrated to USA in 1868 aged 15 the youngest of 11 children and became known all over the USA as the copper king..one of the major figures in Americian industry. He is also remembered here in Derrylea for his large donations to building the local church (RC) in Crosserlough ...always worth a visit.

Perhaps you can explore ancient history? ...older than the pyramids, than Stonehenge....only 50 kms from my home. Yes, you can walk in the footsteps of megalithic man, 5,200 years ago ....
The UNESCO World Heritage Brú na Bóinne site of Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth are world famous ....check out ......www.newgrange.com
However there is another prehistoric complex at Loughcrew in County Meath which is often overlooked. Clusters of Megalithic Cairns are dotted around the Slieve na Caillaigh hills at Loughcrew......and that site is only 15kms away.......At Cairn T the backstone of the chamber is illuminated by a beam of light at sunrise on the Spring and Autumnal Equinoxes. ...all to be explored only 20 minutes away.
