Hi there! We're Dieter and Natalie. We're a couple in our thirties who simply love to travel. Natalie is a former copywriter, now a teacher (Dutch and English in adult education) and Dieter is a software developer in a small start-up. When we travel, we love to combine nature (mostly hiking) and culture (museums, castles, old architecture, music, good food,...). We also have 2 cats who simply hate to travel ;)

Description de notre maison d'échange
Our house is located just outside the historical center of Ghent. Ghent is Belgium's (or Europe's) best kept secret according to Lonely Planet :) It is a gorgeous medieval city with 2 rivers, a lively cultural scene and lots of recreational possibilities.
The house is a typical working-class row house from the 1920's, fully renovated some years ago. It is owned by two cats who graciously allow humans into their home ;)
- Kitchen, toilet, dining room and living room are on the ground floor. We also have a small, sunny patio.
- Office space and guest bedroom are on the first floor.
- Master bedroom and bathroom (with bath/shower) are on the second floor.

Description de notre quartier et ses alentours
Our house is located in a residential area just outside the gorgeous historical center of Ghent.
- around the corner: park, playground, shops, nice bar and coffee place, ...
- 8 minutes by bus or bicycle to the historical center (or walk alongside the canal)
- walking distance from a small nature reserve/bird sanctuary
Since everything is so close, we go everywhere on foot or by bike. There are bus stops (to the train station or city center) very close to the house.
! Our home is in a low-emission zone (LEZ). Foreign cars (except Dutch cars) have to be registered, but this is free if your car meets the requirements --> https://stad.gent/en/mobility-ghent/low-emission-zone-ghent

Nos conseils pour des restaurants, cafés, shopping et activitiés à ne pas manquer
- Medieval Ghent:
The historical centre of Ghent, with its 2 rivers, is very beautiful. It has so much to offer: the castle of the counts, the cathedral with the famous Ghent Altar piece, belfry, beguinages, the ruins of the old abbey, museums,...
- Culture & music:
Ghent is the place to be if you like culture. It has a lovely opera house, concert halls in historical venues (e.g. Handelsbeurs, Bijloke, De Centrale, Vooruit), museums (art, design, history, science,...), theatres, street art (https://cultuur.stad.gent/nl/activiteiten/sorry-not-sorry-street-art-map), big and small festivals,...
- Food & drinks:
Ghent has a lot of good restaurants (many vegan options!), charming coffee houses and cool cocktail bars. Visit one of the open air bars during the summer: https://summerbars.com/gent/ and https://www.parkkaffee.be/
- Nature:
Need some quiet and calm? We're very close to small nature reserve 'Bourgoyen' (also popular for bird watching).
Other nature areas are a short bike ride away: 'Groene Velden', the castle park of Claeys-Bouuaert, Vinderhoutse bossen,...
- Recreation & sports:
Blaarmeersen in Ghent has a lake with a beach, mini golf, skate park, squash, tennis, indoor climbing (one of the world's highest indoor climbing walls),... (https://stad.gent/nl/blaarmeersen)
You could also go kayaking or rent a small motor boat on the river Leie.
- Cycling:
There are several excellent bicycle routes in the area. You can use our bikes :)
- The rest of Flanders (cities & sea):
The train station (Gent Sint-Pieters) is less than 5 km away: trains go directly to Bruges (25 min), Brussels (35 min), Oostende/sea side (40 min), Antwerp (50 min) --> https://www.belgiantrain.be/en
- Rotterdam (NL): 1u45min drive

- We have 2 very sweet but shy indoor cats that we would ask you to take care of. They are rescue cats, that are easily scared by other animals, loud children and sometimes each other ;) (The neighbours are willing to help out with the cats, if necessary.) Of course, we will be very happy to take care of your pets in return.
- No parties, no smoking,...
- Be nice to the wooden floors
We are hoping to spend our vacation in the countryside, preferably in the mountains/hills. A like, river or sea nearby is always a plus.
