We are a busy family of 4 who love to travel. We have enjoyed fantastic exchanges with Iceland, France and Holland in Europe and Utah in the US and we can't wait to do more. Graham (half English and half Canadian) is passionate about history (he wrote a book about a relative who was a WW2 naval aviation hero), genealogy and plants and animals (he lived and studied monkeys for 2 years in North Africa). Graham is well traveled as he used to be involved in international nature conservation projects. He is now busy doing family tree and house history research and can help you explore your own family tree too. Ellemiek (originally from Holland) is a hypnotherapist and regression therapist who also enjoys cooking and baking (she used to bake for the local Country Market cooperative in town, producing cakes, cookies, savories and jams). We home educate our boys aged 13 and 11, Roy and Christopher, who like computer and board games, animals, drawing, fencing (the 'en garde' kind with a foil, like sword fighting), local history, metal detecting, fossil hunting and archeology. We have 2 cats, Socks and Moon who enjoy a cuddle now and then but if you wish to travel during your stay in our home, that is fine as we have made arrangements with friends who will feed them in your absence.
The Isle of Wight has a lot to offer. It is frequently visited by people from mainland UK as a chance to unwind and get away from it all. There are plenty of tourist attractions such as Osbourne House, queen Victoria's residence, Carisbrooke Castle where king Charles I of England was imprisoned in the 1600s, a 2,000 year old Roman villa, there is an internationally renowned Botanic Garden near to the house, several secluded beaches nearby and fantastic nature and cliff top walks, places to find unique dinosaur footprints and the island is a fossil mecca, and of course many English pubs some of which are 500 years old where you can relax with locally brewed beer and listen the the nightly entertainment, and places for traditional English afternoon tea, some of which are 500 years old.

We would love to come back when the weather is better, to take full advantage of the veranda and the camp fire pit. There are lovely views of the sea from the house, we couldn't get enough of them. The Island is a walkers' paradise and there are lots of things to see and do. In the months/weeks before the house exchange we were in contact with Ellemieke and Graham several times, our e-mails were always answered promptly. After the long journey, we found a well stocked kitchen and a nice surprise for the children and ourselves. There were plenty of toys for the children and ample space to play in and around the house. We would love to come again!

Description de notre maison d'échange
We live on a small island off the south coast of England, the Isle of Wight. Our home is a detached 150 year old house in its own grounds totaling about 2 acres with lovely sea views. It is less than 15 minutes walk to the beach and coastal paths, and only five minutes from the Botanic Gardens. The house has a lounge with working fire place, a family room (also with working fire place and 42 inch smart internet TV) and a third reception room (which is used for Airbnb when we are home ourselves), large kitchen with double oven, microwave, slimline dish washer, washing machine and dryer. Upstairs there are 4 bedrooms (one en-suite), a family bathroom with bath and a tiny home office.

Nos conseils pour des restaurants, cafés, shopping et activitiés à ne pas manquer
It’s a 10 minute walk to Steephill Cove with its beaches and a few beach cafes, mostly only open during the extended summer season. Ventnor Botanic gardens (with tea room/restaurant and gift shop) and Ventnor park are open all year and are with 10-15 minutes walk from our home. There are several other beaches, some with cafes and restaurants and some secluded and quiet nearby also.

We would love to visit have a longer exchange with Canada (British Columbia or Ontario ideally as we have family there) in 2020. We are also always interested in exchanges with Iceland and Malta. We can travel any time as we both work from home and prefer longer exchanges.
