Description de notre maison d'échange
MEMBER SINCE November 2014
Situated at a beachside community on the Kapiti coast, approximately 40 minutes drive from Wellington. Located in a quiet cul-de-sac ; Paraparaumu Beach village is just a few minutes’ drive away and has lots of café’s, restaurant’s as well as many art & gift shops. The area takes its name from Kapiti Island which is just 4 kilometers off the mainland and a boat leaves daily from the beach and returns about 4.00pm. It is famous for its native birds and as there are no predators on the island they are very tame and inquisitive. Paraparaumu township is just 4 k’s away inland and is well serviced with supermarkets, cinema’s, shopping mall and again …. Even more cafés. I have included some photos of our local area and even one of a nearby favourite beachside café & bar where I often spend an evening with a glass of wine just watching the sun go down.
There is a local airport with connections to Auckland and Christchurch and other NZ airports & Wellington international airport is less than an hour’s drive and has connections to all regional airports in New Zealand as well as other main cities and international destinations. Trains leave Paraparaumu station every 20 minutes for the city. There is also a good bus service which links with the railway station and the surrounding towns. Wellington is an exciting & diverse place to visit with any number of things to do and see. Te Papa museum (Museum of New Zealand) is here along with many art galleries, cinemas, theatres, café’s and many restaurants. Its position is quite stunning overlooking a large natural harbour with the mountain ranges in the background.
The house was built in 2001 and is a comfortable open plan design on one level with lots of light and all day sun in the main living areas, sliding doors lead on to the patio for outside dining. The house was built as a four bedroom home though I use one bedroom as an office / study which as I'm now retired can easily become a 4th bedroom if required. The master bedroom has an en-suite and there is a walk in wardrobe. There is also a separate laundry and a heated, walk in linen storage cupboard. In a residential area with other houses the house and garden are both very private and secluded and is north and west facing which means it gets all day sun. The dining area of the patio gets the early sun for breakfast and is still in the sun for late drinks or supper.
The house is situated about a 15 minute walk from the beach and also to the river estuary with lots of walks and good fishing in the river.
Although close to the beach, it's backcloth is the Tararua mountain range with lots of day walks and longer overnight tramps and there are an extensive number of huts which provide accommodation. There are numerous bush walks within walking distance of home and within a 30 minute drive is an extensive variety of quiet ( as in almost empty ) beaches and bush.
The beautiful Marlborough Sounds is just across the Cook Strait and is easily accessed on one of the many ferry’s that make the daily crossing. My location in the lower North Island means that it is easy to travel north or south and is an ideal base to see New Zealand.

Nos conseils pour des restaurants, cafés, shopping et activitiés à ne pas manquer
Southwards car museum is nearby and has a world renowned private collection of classic motor cars, motor bikes, aircraft and other memorabilia. https://www.southwardcarmuseum.co.nz/ it's definitely worth a visit and often comes as a wonderful surprise to visitors. Wellington has a variety of interesting places to visit so examples would be: a trip on the famous cable car if only to get a great view of the Wellington harbour and surrounding hills. https://www.wellingtoncablecar.co.nz/. There is the national te papa museum in Wellington and like many other good museums in other capital cities, you might need to allocate more than one day to see it all. https://www.tepapa.govt.nz/. Even though there are many attractions to visit, just a walk through the Wellington waterfront is a must & to stop for a coffee at Queens Wharf or a visit to some of the ' temporary' shops that form the markets at any time of the year. There are skates for hire, Kayaks to use on the harbour and bicycles to accommodate 2, 3 or even more people. There is even an inner city beach at Oriental Bay with golden sand and with very clear water in which to swim. Other nearby beaches are just a short drive from the city & are also worth a visit. https://www.wellingtonnz.com/experience/see-and-do/beaches-and-bays.
A visit to this area would not be complete without visiting Kapiti island. The island is with you ........ always as it's never far from view. It's only a short boat ride away and trip leave from the beach every day. You can now experience an overnight stay with a bit of pampering and you will get to experience nature close at hand as there are zero predators on the island and this means the birdlife there not only flourish but are so inquisitive that they will come to you to check you out.
