It is a rural area (free but houses nearby) . Slightly hilly. Nice for half hour walks with the dogs but if you drive 10-30 minutes you will reach stunning landscapes for longer hikes. The castle Alden Biesen of the Teutoiean Order is at walking distance.
Apart from the little town of Bilzen at 5 minutes distant, to which Waltwilder belongs, there a two historically very special cities nearby, both less than 10-15 minutes: Maastricht (Nl) and Tongeren (B), both the oldest cities of those countries. On the river Meuse (Maastricht) some wateractivities can be done. Tongeren has Europe’s biggest open-air antiques market on Sundays and the French speaking city of Liégehas Europe’s biggest open-air fleamarket (at 25 minutes).
The German Aachen at 40 minutes. In one hour you can be in Brussels, Antwerp or Cologne (Germany). Luxemburg is two hours. The Ardennes ( mountains) are one hour.
The Haspengouw region (where we live in ) is famous for it’s extended numbered bicycling network (which runs next to the house) and for its orchards.
The Belgian National Park Hoge Kempen is at 10 minutes drive. Just across the Dutch border (which is also at 10 minutes) ,The Dutch
part Zuid-Limburg begins, with stunning landscapes and a many hiking possibilities, to be found on detailed websites. The same counts for the Belgium Voerstreek (25 minutes). We have four language regions that you can drive through in half an hour. Most people speak three languages at least.
