Roomy house near seaside, ideal to discover Atlantic coast.

Situated at the estuary of the Loire river, Saint-Nazaire is the place where have been built some of the greatest ocean liners of the world such as the « Normandie », the « France », the « sovereign of the sea », the « Queen mary II », but we did not build the « Titanic ». You can visit the site where those legendary ships have been built and are still being built.

Nevertheless for most people the major interest of the area is the Atlantic ocean and the kilometers of sandy beaches. You will find a huge number of sandy beaches with various surrounding. The most popular of the area is in La baule (less than 15 minutes from our home) where the 9km of thin sand attracts lost of tourists. In the south of the Loire, just after the Saint-Nazaire bridge, you will find long beaches too in a wilder environment in Saint Brevin (20 min). All our exchangers enjoyed those beaches but ended up anyway to prefer a small cove of their dreams either in Saint-Nazaire where 20 beaches are referenced, or on the rocky coast between Le Pouliguen and Le Croisic which is a nice old fishing harbor.

When you will be fed up of the beaches, you will have to discover the country side. The area between Guerande,(a medieval walled town) Le Croisic and Batz sur mer is called the white country. White is the color of the salt that is extracted from the sea in the salt marshes since the IV th century after JC. This is a nice place to ride a bike, watch for birds and enjoy sea foods with a glass of muscadet (the white wine that is cultivated near Nantes).

The area between La Chapelle des Marais, and Saint Lyphard is the regional park of La Brière and is also called the black country. Black is the color of the peat that used to be extracted from those swamps for heating purpose. This time the water is not salted and so attracts other variety of birds and animals. The culinary specialties are based on duck and eels. This area has to be visited by boat.
