The town of Duras has a population of about 1,200 people, which is small enough to feel quaint and cozy, but large enough to have several shops, including two bakeries, a pharmacy, butcher, news agent, small grocery, bike rentals, wine bar, two cafes, three restaurants and a castle that is open for touring. There is an outdoor market every Monday morning throughout the year and an evening market on Thursdays in the summer months. There is also a wine consortium where the local winemakers sell their Bordeaux-style blends, which are primarily merlot. The local white wines are made from sauvignon blanc and semillion, and there are also fine roses. Duras is a great town to take a leisurely stroll as there are walking routes in several directions.
