Further afield, Byron Bay is a 1 1/4 hour drive or you can drive to Brisbane in under an hour. Spend your morning walking south to Surfers Paradise on the beachfront footpath (see the whales when they're in season) or turn north and follow the beachside path to Federation Walk and The Spit for birdwatching. Take a swim in the ocean before breakfast at a cafe and then you have the rest of the day to relax or explore.
