Meie kodu

Koduvahetuseks pakutava kodu kirjeldus

Our home, one of only a few houses on a dead end cul-de-sac, is situated on the west side of Jack Mountain overlooking Monterey. It is a place where eagles soar and an inspiration for writers/artists or anyone wishing to recharge their battery and feed their soul. Inside, the recently remodeled 1700 sq. ft. split-level home has 2 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, den, great room with dining area, exercise room, office, garage, indoor sauna, and a screened porch with barbecue grill, gas fire pit, and rockers overlooking the valley. There is an additional enclosed cedar porch with a hot tub on the first level. Our well-equipped kitchen includes a gas stove/oven, dishwasher, espresso machine, refrigerator, juicer, ice cream maker, and microwave. We have high speed internet along with Amazon Video, Hulu, and Netflix as well as hundreds of DVDs to enjoy on our wide screen, surround sound TV. Additionally, each room has its own television. The backyard, fenced to keep out roaming deer and an occasional black bear, houses our large heated saltwater swimming pool, decks, horseshoes, and a small organic herb garden.

Ümbruskond

Ümbruskonna kirjeldus

Our neighborhood is awesome because we have wonderful neighbors! Friendly and helpful are words that are most used when describing the people of Monterey. Our little town of 200 residents (2200 comprise the total population of Highland County) is nicknamed "Little Switzerland" due to the surrounding mountains, scenic beauty, and similar climate to the European country. With its elevation of 3400 feet and nearby mountaintops exceeding 4000, Monterey is truly Virginia’s high land. Crime is virtually non-existent and the atmosphere relaxed and peaceful. Within walking distance of our home are Monterey's restaurants, taverns, stores, new medical complex, library, public pool, gyms, spa, farmers market, the county’s fairgrounds, and Trimble Knob – Virginia’s most popular volcano (but no worries, it's extinct). Additionally, a 1.5-mile walking/running trail is a block away. Within a 10 to 20-minute drive are Jefferson Pools (mineral hot springs bathhouses), hiking trails, Virginia Trout Company and Laurel Fork Creek (fly fishing). During March, we have Maple Fest, Monterey's favorite festival. Highland County is famous for their maple syrup and maple sugar tours are most popular among visitors. Fall is our favorite time of year here and during the month of October, it is apparent that we are not the minority. "Leaf-lookers" flock from afar to see the vibrant colors nature paints in the Highland. Spring brings hills of green and wildflowers. In the dense woods behind our home, morels can be found. The month of May means the opening of the town’s farmers market of local organic produce, dairy, and humanely raised meats. During summer, our weather is the main attraction since temperatures seldom reach 80. Throughout the year, Norman Rockwell’s Americana comes to life in our town’s festivals that showcase their Little Switzerland Cloggers and Blue Grass music. Monterey attracts artists, writers, outdoor adventurists, wildlife enthusiasts, and travelers seeking the kind of beauty only the Allegheny and Appalachia can bestow.

Huviväärsused

Meie soovitused, kuhu minna ja mida teha ajal, kui viibite meie kodus

Beyond our town’s amenities and festivities are more novel sights to explore. Within a 30-minute to an hour’s drive:
• Staunton - Shakespeare Center's Blackfriars Playhouse, ShenanArts, Gypsy Hill concerts in the park. Also, the Amtrak train, with free parking at the Staunton station, runs Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays to and from Washington, D.C.
• Like the movie “Contact”, the National Radio Astronomy Observatory at Green Bank aka Green Bank Observatory searches the universe for E.T.’s. The complex houses the world’s largest radio telescope and is open to the public. By appointment and security clearance, the observatory gives small group SETI (Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence) tours.
• There are numerous locomotive excursions throughout our area, but the best is Cass Railroad. A 22-mile train ride takes passengers to the summit of Bald Knob and its scenic overlook.
• Seneca Rocks is popular amongst experienced rock climbers. Two climbing schools are located at the Rocks as well as Seneca Caverns and walking trails. Nearby is Smoke Hole Caverns and Resort which offers whitewater rafting and canoeing.
• WILD GUYde - Caving adventures, from beginner to extreme, for the not-too-claustrophobic.
• Abundant hiking trails, most with babbling brooks and stunning waterfalls in the Monongahela and George Washington National Forests.
• Omni Hotel’s Homestead is a four-season resort. It is well-known for its spa and hot springs, but the Homestead also offers skiing/snowboarding (mainly for beginners), ice skating, sporting clays, zip lining, tennis, a championship golf course, and water park.
• Some of the best mid-Atlantic skiing is at Snowshoe, another four-season resort. Similar to Homestead in their offerings of all things snow and outdoors, this resort also boasts snowmobile tours and tubing. Although Snowshoe has one of the best beginner ski programs, their slopes are geared toward the intermediate and advanced skiers. Nearby Canaan Valley offers cross country skiing trails, snowshoeing, and sleigh rides.
• Take our 2-man kayak down the road to “the largest battery in the world”, Bath County Pumped Storage Station.
• Camp at one of our favorite spots. Since the sites are secluded and well-kept secrets, we’ll give you the details once you’re here.
• Movie theaters - Warner’s is a 50s-style Drive-In. Additionally, Monterey’s high-tech library shows first run movies the third Tuesday of every month.
• West Virginia Parks schedule some interesting wildlife excursions such as weekend “Owl Prowls”.

A 1.5 to 2.5 hour drive:
• For years, The Greenbrier hid the massive U.S. Congressional Bunker “in plain sight”. Now they give daily tours to “see” it! Definitely the most interesting tour and history lesson our family has ever experienced.
• Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum is now used as an asylum for ghosts. Historic tours, ghost tours, and overnight ghost hunts are given throughout the year.
• Extreme challenges await in nearby West Virginia where the Gauley River claims the #7 title of world’s best white water.

Day trips:
Washington D.C., Hampton Roads, and Williamsburg are all less than 4 hours from Monterey.

Meie eelistused

Mis meile meeldib ja mis mitte ... Siin on meie eelistused ja kodu reeglid.

We have a 14 year-old indoor Bengal cat that will need care such as feeding and litter box upkeep. If or when you are not able to tend to him, our next-door neighbor will take over his care. However, we are seeking exchangers who enjoy the company of a large cat and will treat him with kindness. For a mutually happy and successful exchange, we like to briefly discuss expectations of household responsibilities, such as pet/plant care and how to handle last day cleaning. Although not mandatory, we would prefer a car exchange. We have a 4WD 6-cylinder Toyota RAV4 which handles the hills and mountains quite well. No smoking, please.
