Royal Troon has hosted the Open Championship on nine occasions, with Arnold Palmer, Tom Weiskopf and Tom Watson among the past winners. The Championship will be played there again in 2024. The first tee is five minutes’ drive from my home.

Another Open Championship venue, Turnberry, where the famous Duel in the Sun was played out between Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson in 1977, is half an hour’s drive away. If golf is a big feature in your life, the Ayrshire coast is ideal, with a host of top-class courses on the doorstep.

Troon beach, with its sweeping sands, is only a short drive away. From there, take a leisurely stroll around Troon, and discover the town’s charming cafes, chic boutiques and artisan food shops.

Explore the beautiful Ayrshire coastline and countryside, with award-winning beaches, forest trails, and many historical landmarks such as Culzean Castle with its famous links to Eisenhower, Robert Burns cottage and birthplace museum, the star of Outlander, Drumlanrig Castle, and the stunning 18th century Dumfries House owned by HRH Prince Charles – to name a few!

If you want to spend the day exploring further afield, the historic city of Glasgow is an hour’s drive from the house with wonderful shopping, art galleries and museums. Or you might like to spend the day visiting the bonny banks of Loch Lomond followed by a wee dram at the picture-postcard Glengoyne Distillery, founded in 1833. And of course, Scotland’s capital city, Edinburgh, is a two-hour train journey from my house.
