Our house, situated in a quiet side-road in the town centre, has a living space of approximately 200m2 consisting of 4 bedrooms, a kitchen, a living room with dining area and 2 bathrooms, and a sunny garden (c. 1.500m2) with a swing, sandpit, trampoline, ping-pong table and access to 3 bikes. The generously sized terrace is the ideal spot for a cosy barbecue.
The small Bavarian town Coburg with its 42,000 inhabitants lies between the southern edge of the Thuringian Forest and the Main valley, and is located on the River Itz. With its medieval town centre, regional theatre, the Ehrenburg Palace and, of course, the Coburg Fortress (‘Veste Coburg’), accessible via the charming courtyard gardens, Coburg is a real tourist highlight. A monument to one of the most famous people to come from Coburg, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, was erected by Queen Victoria and can be found in Coburg’s town square.
Bad Staffelstein with its beautiful landscape and monumental hill, the Staffelberg, is within close proximity to Coburg. If the weather is good, a swim in the Westsee Lake is especially pleasant. Alternatively, the Obermain thermal bath is an inviting destination if the weather is being less cooperative.
The Fränkische Brauereistraße, a route which runs through Bayreuth, Kulmbach, Lichtenfels, Bamberg and Forchheim and is home to a number of beer museums, is a great tip for beer enthusiasts, with numerous small and family-run breweries presenting beers of all kinds.
There’s even plenty on offer in the area to keep boredom at bay for the wee ones with various museums (Sonneberg’s Toy Museum, the Doll Museum in Coburg, the Museum of Natural Science in Coburg, to name but a few), lakes for bathing, lidos and leisure parks, such as the wildlife park in Tambach, the Playmobil amusement park and the theme parks at Schloss Thurn and Geiselwind.
The direct link to the motorway also makes it possible for visitors to explore a range of towns and cities. Erfurt, for example, lies an hour’s drive north and the metropolis that is Nuremberg is an hour’s drive south (via the UNESCO World Heritage Site Bamberg). Even Munich is accessible within about three hours by car.
