My sweetheart Bo and I are avid travelers who enjoy wild nature as well as a small village or a buzzing city. I am from California but also maintain a home in Hawaii; Bo is from Sweden but he has lived in Hawaii for many years now. His area of expertise is aviation (data tracking). Sometimes we travel together as a couple; sometimes I travel with my women friends ("the Ladies") as a foursome. We Ladies used to work in wealth management at a major financial services firm, and have continued our friendship in retirement with occasional trips, mainly within the US (most recently Austin and San Antonio, Texas). My last trip abroad was to Japan to celebrate my son's 30th birthday; soon Bo and I will travel to French Polynesia to sample a number of islands.

***Please note: My personal travel is now heavily booked for 2020, but I am still seeking an exchange for May 2020 in Oslo, Norway. Otherwise I must prioritize non-simultaneous exchanges with me taking part in 2021. My house is not available in September 2020.
Simple 2 bedroom, 1-bath cottage nestled in 2 acres of rainforest and cultivated garden on Hawaii's Big Island. Well-equipped kitchen, phone, internet with wifi, laundry facilities. Somewhat rustic, the house is located on the windward side of the island where rainfall averages 350 cm annually. This neighborhood was ground zero for the eruption of Kilauea Volcano's 2018 eruption in the Lower East Rift Zone. Located less than a kilometer from the hardened black lava flow, the home and garden remain serene and green. At night the coqui frogs will sing you to sleep. Please note: the house is NOT close to a swimming beach.

Descripción de nuestro barrio y la zona en que se encuentra
The home is located in Leilani Estates, the site of a major lava eruption from Kilauea Volcano from May to August 2018. You can see the now-hardened lava cones and flows less than a kilometer away. All is peaceful and green again, but the changes wrought by one of nature's strongest forces are fascinating. The neighborhood has returned to quiet and calm; there is a recreational park and playground across the street. A short 8-km drive will take you into Pahoa Village to restaurants, banks, grocery and pharmacy, and a variety of interesting shops. You can explore the entire island with the home as your base. A 35-minute drive into Hilo's beach parks will allow for ocean swimming. A car will be essential.

Dónde ir y qué hacer mientras se esté en nuestra casa
*Tiny Pahoa Village is about 5 miles/8 km away. Though small, there are several good restaurants: Kaleo's, Ning's Thai, Mighty Sushi, Paolo's Italian, Tin Shack Bakery (breakfast & lunch), others.
*It is worth a drive to the coast to see the new black sand beach at Isaac Hale Beach Park where the lava stopped at the very edge of the parking lot.
*Walk down Leilani Avenue to see the now-solidified lava flow that inundated the lower third of the subdivision and flowed 5 miles/8 km to the ocean, destroying 700 homes and creating a new coastline.
*Visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (about 1 hour drive) to understand the geologic forces at work. View the collapsed main crater, steam vents; hike Kilauea Iki, a small crater; drive down Chain of Craters Road to the Sea Arch; take a forest hike.
*Hilo, a 35-minute drive to the north, offers many beach parks (Onekahakaha, Carlsmith, Richardson), many restaurants (Café Pesto, Pineapples, Hilo Bay Cafe, Jackie Rey's Ohana Grill, Ocean Sushi, Suisan Fish Market, etc.), an extensive farmers market, Rainbow Falls, Kaumana Caves, Coconut Island and the Queen Liliuokalani Gardens, the King Kamehameha Statue, events at the Palace Theater, the Lyman Museum, the Tsunami Museum, Imiloa Astronomy Center, and the Mokupāpapa Discovery Center for Hawaiʻi’s Remote Coral Reefs.
*North of Hilo, watch surfers at Honoli'i Beach Park, take the 4-mile/6.4km scenic drive to Onomea Bay; visit the exquisite Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens; continue along the coast to visit Laupahoehoe, the town of Honomu and Akaka Falls, the town of Honoka'a and the magnificent Waipio Valley Lookout.
*Sundays, visit Maku'u Farmers Market, 15 minutes away on Hwy. 130. for exotic tropical fruits and vegetables, delicious local dishes, many art and craft booths, usually with live music.
*The entire island can be visited using our house as a home base, but you may wish to book a few nights on the west coast of the island (Kailua-Kona or Kohala areas) for sandy beaches and more tourist-oriented offerings such as boat snorkel tours, manta ray tours, luaus, etc.

House rules: Please remove your shoes when entering the house. No smoking on the property, indoors or out. Please be aware of electricity use; energy in Hawaii is very expensive. It is important to keep opened foods in the refrigerator and keep the kitchen cleaned up (dishes washed, foods put away, crumbs wiped up) to avoid attracting insects -- this is a tropical environment. Please remove garbage to the exterior can before leaving. Rinse recyclables (glass, aluminum, paper) and place in the recycling bin. (Hawaii Island has temporarily halted the recycling of plastics.)
