We can offer our flat in Berlin or our home in Flintbek, which has got just about 8500 inhabitants, many of whom work in nearby Kiel, a city of 250 000 people. Flintbek itself has got excellent shopping facilities and a number of good and affordable restaurants. In the summer the small public swimming pool is open, but many people prefer to swim in the Baltic Sea that offers long and sandy beaches and which is only a 30-minute drive away, or in one of the nearby lakes, which are situated in a beautiful landscape and are usually quite warm. The wooded countryside around Flintbek is well-worth a visit and very popular with cyclists and hikers for whom special routes are available. The relevant maps are available at our house.
But Flintbek is not only ideally situated for a stay in the country. On the one hand, it is only 6 km away from the nearest motorway, and thus has easy access to the excellent German motorway-system. This means that within ten minutes you can be on your way to Hamburg (90 km) and beyond to the south or to Denmark (90 km) and the rest of Scandinavia to the north. This offers the opportunity for a large variety of excursions near and far. On the other hand, Kiel, the state capital of Schleswig-Holstein, is only 11 km away, which means that in only 15 minutes by car or 7 minutes by train you can be right in the middle of a major city with all its attractions: shopping, cinemas, theatres, opera house, museums, art gallery etc. What makes Kiel so outstanding is the fact that its port is in the middle of the city, so that a large number of cruise ships makes regular stopovers. Also there are two ferry terminals that connect Kiel with Gothenburg in Sweden and Oslo in Norway. This may, in fact, be another idea for an excursion. Kiel is also situated on the famous Kiel Canal, which connects the Baltic with the North Sea. You can walk or cycle along the canal.
Schleswig-Holstein boasts a large number of well-kept stately homes and some beautiful historic towns such as Lübeck, Eutin, Schleswig, Flensburg and Husum.
