Descripción de la casa que ofrecemos en intercambio

Bellevue Street sits right under Table Mountain, walking distance from the city’s leading restaurant district (Kloof St.), minutes drive from prime beaches (Camps Bay and Clifton), markets (Green St and the Biscuit Mill) and the winelands of Constantia. The house is Georgian colonial with large windows overlooking the harbour, wooden floors and ceilings. It is historically Listed but has been carefully modernised. Outside a small garden has apricot and avocado trees and features a huge (20m) columned ‘stoep’ (balcony) with old vines producing very good white (Hanneport) edible grapes, perfect for outdoor entertaining. Adjoining the stoep is a columned al fresco kitchen with a domed wood-fired oven, a large Weber barbeque, a Tandoor, a Moroccan brazier, and a gas hob. At the other end of the house the large swimming pool is salt-water and solar heated. The whole property has internal sensors and box beams outside, with a five-minute response contract and electric gates. There is covered parking for three cars. Opposite is a small park where guests may safely leave cars. At night the view over the whole of Cape Town is stunning.

Our entire effort since acquiring this beautiful Cape Dutch Colonial twenty years ago has been to restore and enhance the Georgian character whilst ensuring its retains its comfy atmosphere but with all mod-cons. Half-panelling has been renewed downstairs where there is a sitting room/ dining room with seating for eight adjoining a modern granite topped kitchen with double fridge and stove and a scullery with a fitted Norfolk pine dresser, dish washer, clothes washer and double sink. There is a double bedroom with French door facing the mountain, floor-to ceiling Georgian windows, and an en suite bathroom: Corner bath, toilet, two sinks, large shower, all with restored brass fittings, and a second bedroom with two single beds also with a large window enjoying the garden and the harbour view. This bedroom is served by another bathroom cross the hall with bath, large shower, sink; again with old brass fittings. Up a short flight of stairs is a vast (20m) open-plan master bedroom with French doors overlooking the mountain, front windows with an even better garden and harbour view and an ultra-modern en-planne bathroom with a glass - enclosed shower, an Italian glass sink and a toilet. This room can easily handle two extra beds. To maintain the feel of Africa, the ceiling is lined with bamboo reed and has a large ceiling fan (and an Air Con unit!)

Barrio

Descripción de nuestro barrio y la zona en que se encuentra

The City Bowl where Higgovale (once a large vineyard running all the way down to the city) is situated, has inevitably filled up over the last decade so there are neighbours all around and security as a result is good - we now have a really excellent, clean and comfortable bus service! Fortunately, because of the little park opposite and our commanding position we are not overlooked. Immediately next door is a large old Victorian housing a jolly family with two doctors in their ranks, father and daughter; dad with a practise in town, who regularly come to our pizza parties. One of the leading private hospitals in Cape Town with 24-hour A and E. is half a mile down the hill. Higgovale has always been the preferred place to live in Cape Town as it is reportedly ‘wind-free’, hence historic housing. Opposite is Lions Head and Signal Hill, popular strolls for sturdy walkers, and a mile up hill from us is the Cable Car to the top of Table Mountain.

Dónde ir y qué hacer mientras se esté en nuestra casa

Cape Town proudly exists as the city of fun where people play all the year round. Blessed by a superb climate it is playground for street performers, marching-bands, boat-rides, fabulous fishing especially in and around the harbour known as the Waterfront, where everything is also for sale from Ferraris to Ferragamo. There are clubs, pubs and rubs galore all drawing on a cosmopolitan population which has always lived both inside and outside South Africa’s sometimes ugly political norms. It has, for example, the largest population of Afrikaans-speakers in South Africa - but they are not descended from the Dutch Boers but from Cape Malay stock. In days gone by Cape Town was known as the Tavern of the Seas. It has a Philharmonic orchestra (and an annual Last Night of the Proms!) which happily fiddles away in the world famous Kirstenbosch Garden in the summer. There are theatres of international quality like the Athol Fugard Theatre, and a ballet company of world renown, running happily alongside the rumbustious annual Cape Carnival when the Coloured community takes over the streets. It is a paradise for Foodies (among who’s ranks we claim our place having one daughter who has cooked for Gordon Ramsey and Noma in Denmark and another who studied and sells wine hence our unusual al fresco facilities.)
You can walk walk safely from our house to Kloof Street where there are (at the last count) 24 restaurants, all at prices and varieties to make your mouth water.
There are more than 20 varieties of edible fish caught in the two oceans which meet at the Cape and as a plant, especially vegetable, garden the Cape knows no equal indeed it has a special place in the hearts of gardeners as ‘the Cape Floristic Kingdom’ with unique flora known as Fynbos. Cape cooking began in the days when Cape Town was a victualing station for the Dutch East India Company, the ships bringing Cape cooks all the exotic spices of the Orient on their return stops. The Afrikaner ‘Braai’ starts in the dawn of Boer history too – it is ‘barbeque’ at its very best and more. If you play golf, love rugby or cricket, or like international rock concerts you will never rest in this town – which is probably why Cape Town now has the reputation of the most sought winter holiday destination in the southern hemisphere.

Nuestras preferencias

Lo qué nos gusta y lo qué no... Estas son nuestras preferencias y normas domésticas.

We have a special interest in the lemon-growing terraces along the Mediterranean and want to spend a few years exploring that hot coast. First choice would be the Amalfi coast or Sorrento way, but anything in and along would be of interest. (Robin is a writer and has begun to think about a book on vegetables and volcanoes!) But we also love Santa Margarita Ligure, Cannes, Seville etc, etc and as we are new to swapping have very open minds. The Cape house can be available in January, even Christmas and New Year, which is prime high season in the Cape but we are looking for something of at least equal size and character. We would like to be in Europe in June or September, or bits of both extending into October. We also have a nice big wing of a Georgian mansion in the very pretty Cotswolds which we would consider as a reciprocal swap if anyone were interested. West Hyde House is very elegant, again has all modern conveniences, three bathrooms and seven nice bedrooms. Cars are also available both in Cape Town and Hyde.
