Rennes is very dynamic, young (one of the biggest university in France) and has a big cultural scene. Music, theater, festivals... there is much to do here.
You'll also find very good restaurants, trendy cafes and shops just in the area.
And because it is not a very big city, everything is very accessible by walk.

All highways are free in Brittany and Normandy ! From Rennes, by car, you can easely reach, in less than one hour, famous see side towns as Cancale, Saint-Malo, Dinard and Le Mont Saint Michel !
If more adventurous and want to ride further, Normandy is not too far (1h45 to Caen for example).
The new high speed train line puts Paris at only 1h20 !!
