Hi, my name is Katharina, I am 45 years old and live in Berlin since 1998. After a career in research (sociology) I decided to turn things upside down and got trained as a systemic coach and bodytherapist. I am now freelancing and I love the freedom it brings, especially for travelling longer than the usual 2 weeks. I try to escape Berlin for a month twice a year. For me it is important to really connect to the culture of the place I stay rather than rushing around chasing the usual tourist spots. This is my first attempt to swap homes, but I have sublet my rooms during my travels and I have made only positive experiences. So far I have shared flats during travels in the US, UK and Japan. As a person I am curios, open-minded, tolerant and friendly - and a bit introvert at times, too.
My son Joscha is 22 years old and - due to the horrible rental market in Berlin - he still lives with me. The pandemic hit right after he finished school and right now he works with refugees from Ukraine in order to earn some money to travel southern Europe during winter. Afterwards he plans to study.

Descripción de la casa que ofrecemos en intercambio
Our flat is located in the middle of Kreuzberg, right next to the famous Canal. It is on the 5th floor (no elevator) and has beautiful sunny views into the green overlooking Kreuzberg. The living room with balcony is 26 sqm, the bedroom ist 12 sqm. I live here with my 22 year old son Joscha. While you will stay in my two separate rooms (bedroom & living room with balcony), you will share the kitchen and the bathroom with Joscha. He is either working, studying or travelling. As he is fluent in English, he will be happy to help you with anything. I prefer old stuff that has a history over IKEA etc, so my rooms are mostly equipped with individual furniture - some of them I restored myself. Our kitchen is small and the fitted-in furniture is 25 years old and therefore looks a bit shabby, however it sits two at the table and has everything you need to prepare meals. As a small compensation you can watch the TV Tower at Alexanderplatz while sitting at the kitchen table ;-)

Descripción de nuestro barrio y la zona en que se encuentra
Kreuzberg is a multicultural and former mainly working class district in the centre of Berlin. According to the old postcodes, Kreuzbergers distinguish between "36", the more alternative, punk rock and hip part of the district and "61", the more academic and posh, yet still alternative part. We are lucky to live in an area where these two melt! Kreuzberg architecture mainly consists of old buildings (ours is from 1870!) and has lots of green spots.
Our neighbours are quite and friendly, however there is not a lot of contact with them.

Dónde ir y qué hacer mientras se esté en nuestra casa
Going for a stroll at the Canal right behind the house is nice in every season and you will find lots of cafés, restaurants, little shops, markets and the buskers during summer. You can even rent a kayak during summer time to explore the city via the Canal. The Prinzenbad, a public swimming pool is right behind our building - hop into the water to refresh yourselves during a hot summer! The Berlinische Galerie, the Jewish Museum, Checkpoint Charlie as well as Galerie König are in a walking distance. The southern - and less posh - end of Friedrichstraße is closeby and I like to walk it up north and see how the atmosphere changes gradually until you reach Unter den Linden and Brandenburg Gate.
I am happy to point you to my favorite places and give recommendations.

Generally speaking I trust people and I assume that you treat my home like you want me to treat yours. We don't have special rules here. However, what is important for me is that you don't smoke in the flat - you may smoke on the balcony as long as you keep the door shut and clean out the ashtray. Also, please respect my neighbours and keep it quite after 10pm. I love my old furniture - I could tell you a little story about almost every thing that surrounds you here! - so please treat it well. You are welcome to bring your child, however, the flat is not suitable for small children under the age of six. Also, I don't have any toys.
