Our Home For Exchange

Description of the home we are offering for exchange

Large, airy apartment - 3 bedrooms, one with a queen size bed, one with a queen size murphy (pull down) bed, and one small room with fold out double couch. Each has a bathroom (1 tub, 2 showers.) . High ceilings, large windows overlooking an open cityscape and even a peek of the Hudson River. The main living area is "loft style" - with living and dining areas open to each other, along with a compact but very well equipped kitchen. We have two desks, a medium large sized TV, internet, stereo, washer and dryer. (There is also a larger laundry downstairs.) There is a roof garden with lovely plantings and wooden lounge chairs as well as tables for picnics, open spring through mid fall. A weekly cleaning lady is available. We have a 24 hour doorman. Car exchange is negotiable, but not for city use. Public transportation is close at hand and much easier. Yearly schedule varies, often depending on whether my husband is working out of the country, but usually our apartment is more available during summer and...sometimes Christmas week.

Attractions

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home

Our guests have always complained that there is too much to do in New York City - so I guess I can complain there is too much to write about! Many museums - Broadway (20 minutes to Times Square on the subway ) - Lincoln Center, -Central and Riverside Parks (including children's playgrounds) - boats playing the Hudson, the High Line, Greenwich Village. You can walk over the Brooklyn Bridge, and look back to see the the iconic NYC skyline, even splurge on a glam restaurant with this view, or stick with pizza and chocolate. The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island (an immigrant museum) beckon. Grand Central station is quite a hub, with many food stations, the famous Oyster Bar, a greenmarket with other items like fish and meat and chocolate, many stores, a little train museum. The world trade center museum, the Empire State Building. Well, you are probably familiar with all of this....

Our favourite restaurants

  • Restaurants line the streets in our neighborhood. Our latest favorite is Tartina. We keep a list of local restaurants for our guests, as well as restaurant guide books.

Special places to shop

  • Again, we have lists - but recommend the museum shops, many of which have excellent and interesting items. Visitors from abroad seem to like the Century 21 shops. Lower Fifth Avenue has many shops of interest, including Eataly and Marimekko. Polar

Leisure and cultural activities

  • At the right time of year (which may not be in summer) tours backstage are offered at Lincoln Center, for example, tours of the Met. It is also possible to get tickets to various audience TV shows, but you usually have to buy them ahead of time.

Walks or jogging paths

  • the path along the Hudson in Riverside Park is one of many, for walking and biking. Central Park also offers many paths.

Health or fitness clubs

  • There are several on the upper west side.

Interesting day trips

  • Beacon DIA (a sculpture museum up the Hudson, also Boscobel for plays, various places for music, various mansions, eg Kykuit (the Rockefellar estate, including garden (starts from Phillipse Manor in Sleepy Hollow, also worth a visit itself
  • Bronx Zoo (also one in Central Park, but tiny in comparison) the Bronx and Brooklyn Botanical Gardens

Our Preferences

Our home exchange - here are our Preferences and House Rules

We have done many exchanges, and have a (too) long list of instructions to make your stay easier, which also includes local restaurants, places to see, etc. We also include instructions about medical help. Our basic thought is not to have any appliance used without reading the instructions, unless you are familiar with that particular item. Our cleaning lady usually comes once a week, and can answer some questions. We strongly prefer that you at least skim the instructions, and then consult as needed.
