Our Home For Exchange

Description of the home we are offering for exchange

We live in a very old farm house, which is full of character (which also means it occasionally needs to be talked to and given a warning about general behaviour). The views from
the house are wonderful. It has central heating and a log burning stove. We have four double bedrooms, one has an en suite shower and toilet. We are using the small fifth bedroom to store general stuff while we’re away. Generally it is cosy and has a great atmosphere. The cooking is done on a range heated by mains gas (which means it is always on and ready for a pizza, but loses heat quickly through the hot plates if you are trying to sear eight salmon steaks one at a time). Cakes can be a challenge, until the stove realises you will not take any nonsense, and you have mastered inserting the cooling sheet. (Actually, cooking is really easy and there is a combi-micro wave if it all really gets too much). We have mesh WiFi, which seems to be reasonably good for speeds.
We have a high chair and travel cot available, if needed.
There is room for two cars, but they need to be turned in our space to drive out again.
The garden is a good space and gets the sun until early evening. ( We are currently developing the required lockdown-vegetable patch etc). There is a swing, barbecues (smaller and larger) and bikes are available to explore the lanes around the area. We cycle over to Loweswater, Crummock and other local places.

Neighbourhood

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area

Our village is quiet and peaceful. It is about 1 mile from the National Park boundary, and just a few miles from lakes, fells, a forest centre and even the Cumbrian coast! There are loads of local attractions for most ages and different activities from gentle tours to high-adrenaline outdoor pursuits!
The nearest pubs are in neighbouring villages, mostly (if not all) with options for food. You can walk or cycle to them easily. Cockermouth is about 2.5 miles away, with supermarkets, butchers, great fishmonger and many independent shops. There are many places to eat - from fine dining to takeaways!

Attractions

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home

The Cumbrian Lake District is a wonderful holiday destination with a myriad of outdoor and indoor attractions and activities. The area is world famous for its scenery and views, which can be enjoyed from the car park over looking a lake, or from the top of the highest peak in England - Scafell Pike (takes a touch more effort and a pair of boots). The walking is superb, as are the mountain biking and road biking (over the passes if you fancy.....!). There are different water sports - canoeing, paddle-boarding, sailing etc and even sea kitesurfing at Allonby.
Whinlatter Forest Centre is great for kids - young and old, with trails to explore and a Go-ape for the not-so-faint-hearted! Also mountain bike hire and a cafe with a great terrace in nice weather.
A little further away is historic Carlisle and just beyond is Hadrian’s Wall, easy to visit in a day ( in fact the wall and the Roman Empire is well represented near here!). Scotland is literally up the road and visible across the Solway!

Our Preferences

Our home exchange - here are our Preferences and House Rules

Please turn cars in our space or reverse out. Please don’t park or reverse onto neighbouring driveways.

Please treat the house as you would your own and leave it more or less as you found it.
If you break something replace it and/or tell us.
If you have a “garden evening”, just respect our neighbours might not be on holiday like you! So keep noise levels reasonable and come back inside by 10.30 ish.
