Neighbourhood

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area

We are in Palo Alto, a very green, tree lined town 35 miles / 50 km south of San Francisco. Palo Alto is home to Stanford University and its beautiful campus that is open to visitors and that you must visit! Our neighborhood, Midtown, is a residential area, home to many families. Within walking distance of our house, you will find a shopping area with a supermarket, pharmacies, a few cafés and restaurants, and other businesses. There are many more restaurants in Palo Alto, as well as very nice farmers' markets. You can easily ride our bicycles around our town and many people do it. There is a train station with service to San Francisco, but having a car here is helpful. We offer a car exchange.

Attractions

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home

Stanford University is the biggest local attraction in Palo Alto. It is a very large and beautiful campus with many attractions, including several art museums, a concert hall, Hoover Tower from which you will have a wonderful view of the area from San Francisco to San Jose, and more. Palo Alto also features public swimming pools and tennis courts, as well as a small zoo and museum for young children. You will enjoy our farmers' markets. Our local marsh area, the "Baylands" is a major spot for wild birds of all kinds, and worth a visit. We are not very far from the ocean coast ( Half Moon Bay, Santa Cruz, and Monterey/Carmel). San Jose and Santa Clara, 15 miles south of us, also have attractions, including the Great America amusement park and the Tech Museum that will definitely appeal to the younger crowd. If you like nature, as we do, there are numerous hiking possibilities in our coastal hills, as well as along the Bay.

We are within convenient distance to San Francisco and all it has to offer. San Francisco is a beautiful, colorful city, with great restaurants, many sites, historical and otherwise, and some wonderful museums. Our home is a great base to visit San Francisco, especially in summer, when San Francisco can be foggy and cool. You go visit SF during the day and then retreat to sunny and warm Palo Alto.

Our Preferences

Our home exchange - here are our Preferences and House Rules

We prefer it when people remove their shoes inside our house, as we have wood floors with some rugs.
We also prefer to have our pots and pans hand-washed rather than put in the dishwasher.
