From our house, it is a short walk to Pt. Reyes National Seashore, a protected wilderness area. Depending on the season, you can see whales, and, of course, many sea birds, seals, and sea lions. With a permit, you can build a fire on the beach, and camp in the park. Also, nearby is Tomales Bay where you can kayak, canoe, sail, windsurf, or paddle board. We also recommend kayaking on Drakes Estero, and we have kayaks available for your use. Farther afield is the Russian River (good for canoeing) and the Napa and Alexander Valleys for fine dining and wine tasting. If you feel like taking an urban outing, you can easily take a day trip into San Francisco, a 1 to 1.5 hour drive. Or you can drive 45 minutes to Larkspur Landing and take a ferry into San Francisco. Buses to San Francisco are also available from San Rafael.
