Our Home For Exchange

Description of the home we are offering for exchange

No swaps of less than a week, and we prefer two or three weeks, as we like plenty of time to get to know the places we visit. We would be especially happy to arrange a swap which would give us some time in England or New England midSeptember to midOctober. We love to stay home in the summer but would consider a 7-10 day nonsimultaneous swap during which we would visit some other part of Alaska and then be at your home in the spring or fall. If you want a few more days in Alaska to explore Denali National Park we could make one of our cars available for you to use after we get home.
In general we are open to suggestions for simultaneous or nonsimultaneous swaps.
We welcome offers from North America and Europe, and we will care for pets if you wish, though we have no pets in our home.

Our house is a 1900 s.ft. modern house set on 1.6 acres of birch woods three miles north of the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The living room upstairs looks out onto the woods where, in June, wild roses bloom. In the autumn the birch trees form a golden halo around the house, accented by red berry bushes in the undergrowth. Moose frequently stroll by with their calves or bed down for a rest. An extensive system of hiking/skiing trails beckons along the edge of our lot. Our house has two bedrooms each with a queen bed and an adjacent full bathroom, plus a third bedroom used as a sewing room but with the possibility of use of an inflatable queen mattress; that room has an ensuite bathroom.

Please write with any questions about our home or the area. We enjoy hearing from people around the world and are happy to share information to allow you to plan a memorable trip to Alaska.

Neighbourhood

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area

Our neighborhood is not really urban or suburban or rural. Our home is in a subdivision with lots over 1.5 acres, with hiking/skiing trails throughout, and wilderness not far away. The university is 3 miles away and the center of the town of Fairbanks 7 miles. Within a five mile drive you could be at a Safeway grocery store open 24 hours a day or in wilderness with a majestic view! The population in the city and immediate area is about 100,000, but the nearest other area with a population that size or greater is 350 miles away, so our area has more amenities than you might expect for a population this size. Natural beauty is a part of our daily lives, as our house is surrounded by birch forest. Yet cultural opportunities abound, at the university and in the community. You may find it hard to believe that most of the time, especially on weekends, there are several activies vying for our attention every day. We may be in a fairly remote location but it is not a backwater.

Attractions

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home

Enjoy the peaceful setting of our home after visiting museums or parks or taking a trip on a riverboat. Check out the aurora borealis from our balcony or front steps. Drive to Chena Hot Springs for a soak in the natural rockpool or to Denali National Park to see the tallest mountain in N America. Watch dog mushing races or a tradional Parka Parade. Root for your favorite dog at the weightpulling competion. Walk along wooded trails to the Large Animal Research Station to see muskoxen, caribou, and reindeer. And be sure to keep a watch for moose in our yard or along the roads and city streets.

Our area is beautiful in all seasons! We have done winter swaps with people who are not used to cold weather, and they all had a great time; the weather really is manageable with the right clothes, and the aurora is such a spectacular sight, as are the world class ice sculptures. March is a particularly wonderful month here, with long hours of sunshine and lots of fun activities.

Our Preferences

Our home exchange - here are our Preferences and House Rules

We are happy to discuss swaps with families with older children, but our two bedrooms are on different levels of the house so our home is probably not suitable for families with small children. The house most easily accommodates two couples, but we have a queen air mattress and additional sleeping pads which can be set up in the sewing room (third bedroom), making the house fine for larger or different groups (parents with boy and girl teens; family reunion with two brothers, one sister, and one wife; parents with adult daughter plus adult friend--all of these have had a great time at our home in the past). Don't hesitate to write with queries. The nearest bus stop is a mile away, so a car is necessary; we can arrange for you to use one of our cars even if your city location does not necessitate a car exchange, as long as you have a valid license. We do not have a second home, but we travel frequently so have arranged many nonsimultaneous exchanges as well as simultaneous ones.
