In our youth we worked in local government, education and mental health. We then ran a Bed and Breakfast in Whitstable for 12 years. We are now retired and look forward to as many holidays as our meagre pensions allow!! We like restaurants, travelling, PEOPLE, arty things: theatre, film, music.

Description of the home we are offering for exchange
Our home is in a quiet residential area outside the seaside harbour town of Whitstable in Kent. We have parking for two cars and unrestricted street parking (parking is difficult in town!). The house has two bedrooms, both with kingsize beds and wardrobes. There are wooden floors and central heating throughout. The lounge has two reclining sofas and two tub chairs, TV (with Sky) and a DVD player. The wood-burning stove is great for taking the chill off in Autumn or Spring when it's not quite cold enough to put the heating on. The bathroom has a WC, basin, bath with shower over. The kitchen is modern with a large American style fridge-freezer, dishwasher, washing machine and sink with drainer. There is a single oven and a new induction hob and microwave combi oven. The kitchen is open-plan to the conservatory in which there is a two-stool breakfast bar and a dining table (seats 6) as well as an easy chair. The conservatory faces southwest so is light and warm and has full side blinds and roof blinds as well as opening windows and a separate door to the garden patio. The garden is quite private, tree-lined on two sides with lots of shrubs, borders, and raised beds. There are two separate patio dining areas with parasols, plenty of chairs as well as a wooden "love-seat" swing. Outside the front and back doors is a covered patio area at the side of the house. There are sheds for storage, containing two bicycles on which you can explore the local area and town (which is very cycle-friendly). There are portable BBQs and "carry chairs"and picnic rucksacks for the beach.

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area
We live on the west edge of Whitstable in an area called Seasalter. A 5 minute walk from the house will take you to the unspoilt shingle beach which stretches all the way into town (20 mins walk). There is a Post Office/corner shop on the way to the sea (west), and a small supermarket about 5 minutes further on. (Larger supermarkets are only a few minutes' drive or by bus). Only 5 minutes' walk, heading East towards town, will bring you to the nearest pub (The Rose in Bloom) which does lunch and dinner and has fantastic sea views from the garden. The light and the sunsets are quite spectacular which is what motivated Turner to paint here, as well as in Margate which is only 15 minutes by train further down the coast (as are other seaside resorts like Broadstairs and Ramsgate). Whitstable itself has become a trendy favourite of Londoners as it is the nearest coastline to the capital, with fast train links to London Victoria and the hi-speed service to St . Pancras International. (70 minutes). Whitstable is famous for its oyster industry and its restaurants like Wheelers and Michelin-starred gastropub The Sportsman. There is a regular bus service into town which also goes to Canterbury (7 miles), famous for its Cathedral and Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. There is also a great cycle ride to Canterbury using a national cycle route. Whitstable has been praised for its independent shops and restaurants as well as the harbour and its unspoilt beaches. There is a swimming pool, indoor bowling green and tenpin bowling alley as well as a gym and health club, tennis courts and a 9 hole "links" golf course, and yacht club. There are walks or cycle rides all the way along the coast (Coastal Viking Trail) with great views. We have our own independent theatre as well as the Horsebridge Community Centre and numerous art galleries. As a working harbour town, there are pubs galore, many of which serve food and host a vibrant music scene - that's proper music not night clubs!!

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home
The beach is a 5 minute downhill walk from the house. A 30 minute stroll to the west will bring you to the Michelin-starred gastropub, The Sportsman, which was recently voted as one of then best restaurants in the country! 20 minutes to the east brings you into town, passing delightful beach huts and waterfront houses. You are only 6 minutes from the London - Dover motorway (M2) which means a day trip (or longer) to France is a wonderful opportunity while you are staying here.
Margate is only 15 minutes by train and has been revitalised with the "old town" re-vamped with independent shops and cafes, the famous Dreamland re-opened, and the Turner Gallery attracting international recognition.
