Our Home For Exchange

Description of the home we are offering for exchange

Pretty little cottage in Shottery on west side of Stratford. Easy walk to town centre, shops, cafes, restaurants, Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Shakespeare properties and railway station for trains to Birmingham.

Stratford is a fascinating old market town in its own right, but our chief joy is in its ideal location in this lovely area of rural England - near to wonderful stone villages set in rolling countryside, ancient castles and churches, historic houses and gardens. English Heritage and National Trust properties abound. Perfect for exploring the Cotswolds, Oxford, Malvern Hills etc. It's gentle walking country. Excellent rail link from Warwick Parkway for a long day in London too!

NB I have a little dog, Polly, who is hypoallergenic. She goes into kennels when we exchange

Neighbourhood

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area

The cottage is within easy walking distance of the town centre, the nearest supermarket and the station, with trains to Birmingham, and to London via Leamington. There are many more trains to London from Warwick Parkway, a short drive away. The house is one of 15 terraced cottages built in 1935 by Sir Archie Flower of Flowers Brewery for his workers. There is ample parking on a wide gravelled forecourt, but no garage. To the rear there is a courtyard garden with views over Shottery Fields, an open space given by Sir Archie to the people of Stratford in perpetuity. In Shottery village numerous visitors come to see Anne Hathaway’s Cottage. Stratford is an old market town famous as the birthplace of William Shakespeare. It is one of the UK’s most popular tourist destinations with picturesque buildings, the River Avon and many Shakespeare properties. There are lots of tea-rooms, cafes, pubs and restaurants – and two cinemas. The Royal Shakespeare Theatre is one of the best in the world.

Attractions

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home

In addition to the attractions of Stratford itself, nearby are Charlecote, Baddesley Clinton, Packwood House, Coughton Court and Hidcote Manor Gardens (all National Trust) as well as magnificent Kenilworth (English Heritage) and Warwick Castles, Coventry Cathedral - unmissable, beautiful Broughton Castle, the gentle rolling Cotswolds, Oxford, Worcester, Gloucester, the Malvern Hills … and so on. And for industrial heritage, the Black Country Museum (in my home town of Dudley) is worth a day of anyone's time. A very short drive away there is wonderful easy walking country.

Our Preferences

Our home exchange - here are our Preferences and House Rules

**WE NOW HAVE ENOUGH EXCHANGES FOR 2019**

We have exchanged over two dozen times in our 16 HomeLink years, have discovered fascinating places and made many friends. We are only ever interested in exchanges in Europe and the UK: no long haul destinations. I don't fly. Our interests are in European languages and culture, heritage and architecture. Outside the UK we prefer to travel by rail to a town or city with good public transport. It's a pleasure to leave the car at home!

My cottage is small, but it sleeps three comfortably. It has to be said that the house is more suitable for adults, though families with children have been very happy here. The playing field at the bottom of the garden is always popular. There are no toys, but there are board games (chess, draughts, Scrabble etc), playing cards and lots of jigsaw puzzles in the house. And the piano is a nice one, always kept in tune. I am a keen amateur pianist.

The stairs in the cottage are quite steep. There is a loo downstairs in addition to the one in the upstairs bathroom (with bath and shower).

I would accept a well-behaved dog. I'm afraid I could not contemplate an exchange where a cat is involved.
