Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area
Our neighbourhood, Duddingston, is quiet and friendly with lots of families and community activities.
It is situated in walking distance of some of Edinburgh's most popular attractions: Holyrood Park, the Historic Duddingston Village, The Sheep's Heid (the oldest pub in Scotland) and Duddingston Nature Reserve. The UNESCO city centre is a 15-20min bus ride with excellent regular services. Close to our apartment, there is also signed cycle route to the city centre along dedicated cycle paths. From these cycle paths you can also reach major destinations: the National Museum of Scotland, Hoylrood Parliament, the Meadows, Holyrood Palace and the Royal Mile.
Also within walking distance (15-20min) is Edinburgh's seaside, Portobello, which has lovely independent cafes, swimming pool shops, community events and market and restaurants. From the sandy beach there are great views across the Firth of Forth to Fife and East Lothian. The local park has the Figgate Burn (river) running though it to a lake with wild fowl and and wildflower meadows.
The nearby Fort Kinnard Shopping centre has a cinema and most high street shops.
Although we are situated in the city the long distance, John Muir Way, hiking trail passes through the neighbourhood near to our house and can be followed across the city to the north, or south toward to and along the coast to the towns of Musselburgh and North Berwick.
