They collected us from the nearby train station, helped us settle in to their convenient and beautifully appointed home and were responsible for making this one of the best exchanges we've done. We can't fault it. We enjoyed their company and it came as no surprise to us that they took great care of our house and car. Totally trustworthy and we are more than happy to recommend their house and them as exchangers.

Read More...Ian and Helen made us feel very welcome in their wonderful home with some very thoughtful welcome gifts. The house is absolutely immaculate and very, very comfortable. The garden is wonderful and we enjoyed the home grown vegetables. The location was ideal and we regularly caught the bus to Winchester and Southampton, even though the car was available, which we used for longer trips and shopping expeditions. We explored historic Winchester and Southampton, enjoying all the history and the many fine restaurants and pubs. We also visited Salisbury and it's wonderful cathedral. This was a great home exchange and We thank Ian and Helen for the wonderful opportunity of staying here.

Description of the home we are offering for exchange
Our home is a comfortable detached chalet bungalow with a large garden and ample parking. We are sited above and well back from, the main road between our commuter village and the nearest town of Eastleigh, with immediate views of paddocks and the distant city of Southampton.
We have set up our home to be cosy and easy to live in. The kitchen is large, well equipped and overlooks the garden; the central dining table is a place to chat and eat and is always in use for some job or other. For convenience, the kitchen also houses the dishwasher, washing machine and tumble drier and a TV. You can reach the garden from the kitchen door which immediately opens into a porch and car port.
In the summer, we spend a lot of time in the conservatory which projects into the garden and this is a lovely place to relax during the day or evening. Our attractive garden has several seating areas allowing you to enjoy sun or shade at any time of the day.
Upstairs, the master bedroom with its en-suite bathroom is spacious and overlooks the garden and it is accessed via the study which has views across the road to paddocks.

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area
Fair Oak is a growing suburban village. It has three pubs, a very good Indian restaurant and several take-aways including a very good fish and chip shop. There are two small shopping centres featuring three convenience stores, hair dressers, bakery, butcher and pharmacy. The local surgery and another pharmacy are a 5 minute walk away. Eastleigh is a 10 minute drive and this old railway town offers many more shops and facilities including a modern cinema, bowling alley, sports centre and small theatre.
From our house you can walk to local woods but we are very well situated for short drives to numerous local beauty spots showing off Hampshire's chalk downs, coast and estuarine scenes and riverside walks. There are two 18 hole golf courses within 5 minutes of the house and you are welcome to use our clubs.
Fair Oak has excellent transport links being close to railway stations, Southampton Airport, the national motorway network, cross channel ferry and cruise ship terminals.

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home
Within an hour's drive of the house there are so many attractions that we can only give a flavour here. We have a separate document for our exchange partners that contains a comprehensive list and web site links plus a few suggestions of our favourites.
Within a 20 minute drive you can reach Winchester, an attractive historic cathedral town, Southampton - a modern port and commercial city and several attractive Hampshire market towns. A half hour's drive will take you to many places of interest such as: the naval port of Portsmouth where you can explore historic ships, Southsea which has a range of attractions on the seafront and the New Forest with its walks and wildlife.
Within an hour's drive you can reach several sea-side resorts: Bournemouth- for a day on the beach, Brighton for the pier and pavilion, Poole- windsurfing, Worthing and Chichester. If you head inland you can reach Salisbury (Stonehenge, cathedral), Oxford and the outskirts of London. Interspersed between the various towns and cities is some beautiful countryside with many well defined walks along the coast, rivers, woodland and chalk downland. Our area has interest for: leisurely viewing of historic houses (including Highclere Castle, the set for Downton Abbey) gardens and sites of interest, more active hiking, biking and golfing and many attractions for younger folk - for whom a separate activity folder is available.
There are many country pubs within an easy drive of our home. These offer a good range of food and drink and we will suggest some in the welcome folder. Of course, Winchester and Southampton are rich with eating places.
Our home exchange - here are our Preferences and House Rules
We will take care to present our home to our fellow exchangees in a tidy, clean and safe fashion. All that we ask is that you leave it as you found it. We will treat our exchange partners' homes with the same care that we treat our own. We will respect other people's property recognising that their home contains personal treasures, hard won furnishings, decorations and items of sentimental value.
