Neighbourhood

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area

Chalfont St Peter is a busy village in the southern end of the Chiltern Hills. The village is noted in the Domesday Book and is part of a group of villages known as The Chalfonts (Chalfont St Peter, Chalfont St Giles and Little Chalfont). Our street is a cul de sac close to the centre of the village and is quiet but friendly.

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home

We live close to the village centre (5 mins walking) which has a good range of shops, restaurants and pubs. There are many walks to be explored from the front door. Chalfont St Peter is very well located for travel: Gerrards Cross station is one mile away, from here you can get to central London in 25 minutes, and in the other direction, Oxford (one hour) and Birmingham (2 hours). Heathrow airport is located 20 minutes away by car. The village is popular as it is situated close to many important motorways: M25 (circumvents London), M40 (Oxford and Birmingham), M1 (Nottingham, Sheffield and Leeds), M4 (Bath, Bristol, Wales).

From the village you can pop into the following: Milton's Cottage in Chalfont St Giles (walkable in 30 minutes), Bekonscot Model Village (15 minutes drive), Chenies Manor House (https://www.cheniesmanorhouse.co.uk) is small but delightful and 20 minutes away so a nice afternoon visit. The Chiltern Open Air Museum (a museum of buildings ranging from a Iron Age Round House to a Victorian toilet block and iron church (https://coam.org.uk).

There are many great day trips to be done from Chalfont St Peter:

Central London is best reached by train from our nearby Chiltern Line station located in Gerrards Cross. There are fabulous walking tours to enjoy and we recommend this company : https://www.walks.com/ - all the walks we have done with them have been revealing, entertaining, educational and fun. Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace is always a great favourite - this company does a good one (it is busy though so you will be among a crowd!) - https://funlondontours.com. Visits to Parliament may interest you - https://www.parliament.uk/visiting, there are endless Museums - The British Museum (Richard's favourite), The Victoria and Albert Museum (my favourite!), The Natural History Museum. particularly in South Kensington and Galleries - The Tate, the Tate Modern, The National Gallery, The National Portrait Gallery (my favourite!). If you have a particular interest we can help you with more offbeat places to visit as there is far to much going on in London to encapsulate it all here.

A visit to Windsor is easy as it is reached within 30 minutes by car. You can visit Windsor Castle (https://www.rct.uk/visit/windsor-castle), Windsor Great Park (https://www.windsorgreatpark.co.uk/en) and Eton (https://www.visitthames.co.uk/towns/eton-p281731).

If you are interested in historic buildings and houses check out the National Trust (https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk) - Cliveden (the gardens not the house can be visited), Hughenden Manor, Osterley Park, are all close by and are interesting.

St Albans is close too, an excellent opportunity to see a Roman Town and also visit the theatre there.

If you go to Oxford (driving or train - https://www.visitoxford.org) you may wish to compare the other great old university town, Cambridge. Slightly further away by car (1 hour 20 minutes) it is worth the journey (https://www.visitcambridge.org).

Hampton Court Palace is another gem - https://www.hrp.org.uk/hampton-court-palace and again an easy day out from Chalfont St Peter.

Birding Opportunities

We live close to a reserve (Stockers Lake) which is not big but makes a lovely walk and is home to a wide range of bird species - we combine a walk along the canal with a visit to the lake - ask for more information on how to do this if you are interested! https://www.hertswildlifetrust.org.uk/nature-reserves/stockers-lake. Further afield is Poole Harbour (2 hours by car) which is a bird haven and many activities are available (https://www.birdsofpooleharbour.co.uk). Combine this with a visit to the New Forest to see the wild ponies and a very different landscape (https://www.newforestnpa.gov.uk). Whilst you are in this neck of the woods you may also like to visit quaint Christchurch (https://www.visit-dorset.com/explore/areas-to-visit/christchurch).
