Our Home For Exchange

Description of the home we are offering for exchange

Our family home, in a tree-lined street, is ideally placed for exploring the vibrant university town of Cambridge. The picturesque historic centre, with its colleges, museums and shops, is walking distance away - or a short ride on the bus that passes our front door. And when you are tired of sight-seeing you can relax on our large patio leading to a beautiful and secluded garden!

Ours is a traditional 1930s house that we have recently completely renovated and extended to provide modern standards of comfort, while retaining its original features. The spacious hall leads into a large L-shaped living and dining area, with bifold doors that, on a warm day, can be opened up completely to link the living area seamlessly with our large patio. A glass sliding door leads from the living area to our large and well-equipped kitchen, with a dining alcove at one end. Windows run the whole length of the kitchen and around the alcove, making it a wonderfully light and airy room that is a delight to work and eat in.

The front ground floor room is a bedroom/study with twin beds and, combined with the downstairs bathroom with walk-in shower, provides self-contained accommodation that would be particularly suitable for a second couple, or those with reduced mobility who might find the stairs difficult.

On the first floor we have a quiet double bedroom with wonderful views of our long garden (and not another house to be seen). A small bedroom can be provided with a single bed or bunk beds. A large family bathroom has both bath and walk-in shower. (The other room on this floor is Chris's studio.)

The back of the house faces south-west and, in the summer months, the patio is bathed in sunshine for most of the day. A large dining table on the patio encourages us to eat 'al fresco' as often as we can, often cooking on the gas-fired BBQ. If it gets too hot (that can happen!) we have many garden chairs that you can use in our more shaded mini orchard. You may also be tempted to wander further down the garden where, at the right time of the year, you can pick the strawberries, raspberries and blackcurrants growing in our large fruit cage, or whatever is growing in our vegetable plot.

Please look at our photographs and, if you like what you see, get in touch with us.

Neighbourhood

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area

We live in a tree-lined street of comfortable family homes. When you arrive, park your car in our drive - and then forget it, because just about everywhere in Cambridge is within walking distance from our house.

The walk from our front door to the city centre takes you over the river Cam, where you can pause by the college boathouses to watch students rowing or the swans gliding by. You have a choice of pleasant routes: across the open spaces of Midsummer Common, grazed by cows in the summer and home to frequent fairs, fun runs and other community events; or via neighbouring Jesus Green with its tennis courts, open air swimming pool and children's playground. In a few minutes more you are in the vibrant and picturesque centre of what's often called the perfect university town, where the academic and the everyday, the old and the new are seamlessly intertwined.

Five minutes' walk brings you to our local shops, with a range of pubs, cafes and restaurants. And the Sports Centre behind our house offers an indoor swimming pool and large, well-equipped gym.

Attractions

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home

The picturesque historic centre of Cambridge, with its colleges, museums and shops, is just fifteen to twenty minutes walk (or a short bus ride) from our house. Don't miss King's College Chapel with its famous choir; or the collection of literary treasures in the Wren Library at Trinity College; or the artistic gems in the Fitzwilliam Museum. And no visit to Cambridge is complete without a punt trip along the river at the 'Backs' of the colleges.

During term time the University provides a wide range of lectures, events and exhibitions that are open to the public, almost always free. And if you coincide with the annual Festival of Ideas, Science Festival or Open Cambridge you will have enough options to keep you busy from morning to night.

A little further away from the centre are the extensive Botanical Gardens. Or take Cambridge's favourite walk along the river and through Grantchester Meadows to the picturesque village of Grantchester.

For evening entertainment, Cambridge offers two theatres, three cinemas and many venues providing music in all styles from pop to classical, as well as a wide choice of restaurants, cafes and pubs.

If you want to explore further afield, a frequent train service will take you to all the heritage and cultural attractions of London in under 50 minutes - and you can be in the centre of Paris or Brussels in 4 hours. Cambridge is also well connected to the road network leading to the Midlands and the North of England, and the east cost rail line to Scotland.

Our Preferences

Our home exchange - here are our Preferences and House Rules

We are particularly interested in exchanges in Italy, Scotland, the Lake District and Derbyshire but we are open to other options!

Sometimes there is just the two of us when we have Homelink exchanges. Other times we like to invite a couple of friends or our son and daughter and her two small children. If at any time we're hoping to ask extra people we will always discuss such possibilities with potential exchangers right at the beginning of discussions about exchanging.

We may ask for a little plant care occasionally - but there can be added bonuses from the garden when we invite exchanges to enjoy our vegetables and fruit in season!

We ask you not to smoke in our house, and because of allergies we cannot accept pets, but otherwise we are pretty relaxed. We are sure that you will look after our house as well as we will look after yours!
