Read More...We enjoyed our time in the cosy, quiet, old house in the north of Amsterdam very much. The location is perfect. To get to the city centre it`s about a 10-minute bike ride along a very beautiful little street to get to the ferry, which takes you right to the central station. It is also very easy to get to the outskirts of Amsterdam and the beaches in the north. We went nearly everywhere by bike which was wonderful. Close by is a great spot with a Boulder house, Beach Bar and the lovely restaurant "De goudfazant". Amsterdam is an amazing, lively and beautiful city! We also loved Harlem, which is nearby. All in all, we had a great time and felt very much at home in your house. Thank you very much!

Read More...Our stay at Nieuwendammerdijke (the most beautiful street of Amsterdam) has been great, your house is very cute and comfortable. We have enjoyed taking care of your cat and we are very happy that you have taken care of our cats so well. Amsterdam offered us a lot to discover and we loved to cruise around with the bikes in the center, along the dykes and the the docks. We are coming home with a lot of great memories and we are shure that we will come back. We are very happy about this wonderful exchange! Thank you Maarten and Eliane!!

We were also just 5 minutes from the green countryside. Our favourite thing was exploring the canals and some very pretty villages.

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area
The dyke village is originally 17th century, pittoresque, with wooden captain's houses, an old lock next to the small harbor and old pub. The vicar's house was built in the 30's together with a small shopping centre and garden village at the rear of the house. In front of the house you find the dyke, dyke village and a small forest.
A large shopping centre is at 1 km from our house. A nice place to buy food is Landmarkt in the village of Schellingwoude (at 2 km), with a great fresh food department stocked by local farmers.
For both local people and tourists favorite cycling and walking area. You find old villages Holysloot, Durgerdam, Ransdorp, Broek in Waterland, meadows, dykes (Waterlandse Zeedijk at the IJ), moors. On cycling distance the Waterlandse Golfclub.
In 15 minutes cycling you arrive at the (free) ferry. It takes you in 2 minutes to central station, which is the immediate access to the city centre. From there you can go on by foot, bicycle, tram or metro. There is also a busstop at 5 minutes walk from our house. The bus takes you in 15 minutes to Amsterdam central station.
You find several great restaurants on the north side of the IJ and numerous restaurants in the city.

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home
The dyke in front of our house is a favourite route for cycling and walking, for both locals and tourists. Moreover, the city of Amsterdam itself (at 15 min cycling + 2 minutes by ferry) is full of attractive places.
In 45 minutes you are at the beach in Zandvoort, IJmuiden or Bloemendaal. Rotterdam (biggest European harbour) is 1 hour by car away, The Hague (where our government settles) 45 minutes. Nearby popular historic towns are Haarlem, Alkmaar, Volendam, Edam, each within 45 min by car.
You can also reach each of these towns and the beach by train. Amsterdam central station you can reach by bus of bicycle and ferry.
