We are Bryant and Christine, are retired and live on a small "lifestyle" block near Palmerston North. We have a holiday home at Pukawa (Lake Taupo) which is our preferred exchange house. We enjoy travelling, experiencing new cultures and meeting people . We usually travel as a couple but occasionally (if their work commitments allow) we travel with our adult children, Caleb and Samara (born 1993 & 1991 respectively), sometimes they exchange on their own.
We have completed over 30 exchanges (non-simultaneous or hospitality) and have made many life-long friends!

Description of the home we are offering for exchange
This is our modest holiday house in Pukawa at the southern end of Lake Taupo.
Pukawa is a small lakeside holiday area, very quiet & peaceful. Very popular for boating, fishing, swimming and family time!
Our family holiday home is very private & has fabulous views over Lake Taupo. It is set on the hill in native bush - access is via steps and a bush pathway. Access is NOT suitable for those with mobility issues or small children.
The house is spacious & easy care. Floor areas have been recently carpeted (May 2021), all wet areas & the kitchen/dining have fitted lino. Several decks to sit & enjoy the views, bush & birds. Master bedroom has a Queen bed, 2nd bedroom has a Double bed, upstairs is a bunk room and also has a Queen bed. Bathroom has recently been remodelled (2024) and has ashower, toilet and vanity. Kitchen is well appointed. Heating/cooling is via a Heat Pump in the living area. House has wifi.
Two kayaks & life-jackets are available for use, also 2 snow toboggans.
We may be able to make our car available at this location
Great place to relax or use as a base to explore one of NZ's major tourist areas.

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area
Pukawa is a small holiday area on Lake Taupo. It is very popular in the summer as it is lakeside and offers safe swimming & boating. It's also popular in the winter as it is a good place to base yourself for skiing on Mt Ruapehu.
It's close to the tourist attractions of Tongariro National Park with it's fabulous summer hiking/tramping (Tongariro Crossing) & winter snow skiing/boarding (Whakapapa/Mt Ruapehu). Thermal baths, hot mud pools and fabulous trout fishing are all within 15 minutes by car. Taupo with it's restaurants, shops, stunning scenery & activities is only a 45 minutes drive. The closest town is Turangi (bank, supermarket, info centre, shops, bistro/restaurant & medical centre etc) - it is a 15 minute drive from our house.
A car is essential as public transport is extremely limited.

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home
Pukawa is a great place to base yourself to visit all the attractions of the Central North Island. Taupo, Tongariro National Park, Rotorua and more are all within an easy drive. Some of NZ's best tramps/hiking and of course the best fishing is in this area!

Our home exchange - here are our Preferences and House Rules
Our house has stairs and a bush walk track for access - it is NOT suitable for those with mobility issues. Children are welcome but please be aware there are stairs and outside decks - it is a very long way for an unsupervised child to fall.
We ask you take care of our house as you would your own, leaving it clean and tidy after your stay.
Pet care is NOT needed at this house.
