Our Home For Exchange

Description of the home we are offering for exchange

We live in a houseboat designed by an architect and built by ourselves. It is a modern houseboat with all comfort you need. It is large enough for 2 to 3 persons and has a split-level. It consists of 2 bedrooms and a bathroom (bath, separate shower and toilet) downstairs, a fully equipped kitchen and dining area upstairs and a large living room with a second toilet on the ground-floor. The master bedroom has a bed of 2.00m x 1.80m. The smaller bedroom has a single bed of 1.90m x 0.70m. Furthermore we have a large cellar.

On the waterside we have windows from ceiling to the floor which gives you a superb view on the canal and the green park with old trees opposite the houseboat. In fact, the park a part of a rampart. The park is nice and quiet and closes at night.
Our bikes are in front of the houseboat in a shed. You may park your car opposite the houseboat on the other side of the street.

We have modern design furniture, lots of books, and of cause wifi, television, central heating, oven, dishwasher and so on. All comfortably and cosy to have a nice stay!

Neighbourhood

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area

Our houseboat is situated in the beautiful centre of the historic university town Leiden (oldest university of The Netherlands). Opposite the houseboat, on the other side of the water, is a green quiet park with old trees and lots of birds. At night the park closes so it will be very quiet when sleeping. On the waterside the houseboat has large windows from ceiling to floor so there is a wide view on the park. You will see the ducks, swans and small boats come by. In summertime you might want to swim in the water. In fact, we always have the feeling to be on vacation all year round because of the nice green and quiet view and at the same time being in the middle of the city.

On the other side there is the street where you can park your car; parking is just across the street. On foot it will take only 5 minutes to walk to the supermarket, bakery and other shops as well as to various nice restaurants. As Leiden is a university town there are lots of bars, brasseries and also good restaurants. Hard to choose ;-) Also the different museums (13!) are all within walking or biking distance. We enjoy Leiden very much and really like to live on our houseboat in this town full of sights worth visiting.

Attractions

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home

Leiden has numerous sights, art galleries and museums (13!) to visit, nice small shops to go to and cafés / bars, restaurants and brasseries to have lunch, dinner or just a coffee or beer. You may also wander the streets and small alleys, visit the large Peterschurch (Pieterskerk) and its neighbourhood which is one of the nicest of Leiden. In Leiden we have the Hortus Botanicus from 1590, the oldest Hortus in The Netherlands. You can stroll the gardens or visit the observatory from 1633 where Einstein once had a look at the sky and which is nowadays still working.

Furthermore, don't forget to make a boat trip through the canals of Leiden, with a rented rowing boat or on a longboat that cruises all the canals and also passes our houseboat.

Within half an hour drive from Leiden you will have the sea, sandy beaches and dunes near Katwijk and Noordwijk, certainly worthwhile a visit to swim, walk and simply enjoy. There are numerous eating places (so-called 'strandtenten') where you can eat typical Dutch pancakes ('pannenkoeken') or have a drink.
And of cause you should visit Amsterdam, Delft or Utrecht.
You may borrow our citybikes so you can easily make trips in Leiden and surroundings. We will leave you lots of information / brochures with suggestions to do.

Our Preferences

Our home exchange - here are our Preferences and House Rules

We have been exchanging for 20 years now and did more than 40 exchanges (also with an other exchange organization). We visited different countries in Europe (France, Italy, Spain, Germany, UK, Belgium) and exchanged with nice people in Virginia - USA. Furthermore we did many exchanges in our own country The Netherlands.

As we are aware that we are a guest and stay in someones own house we will always take very good care of the house, garden and belongings. We keep it tidy and clean. The both of us do not smoke and we prefer that our guests do not smoke inside. Unfortunately our houseboat is not suited for children, sorry about that.
You will find our houseboat comfortable, very clean and tidy, with fresh flowers in the rooms.

Our wishes? The countryside, villages, historic cities, on the coast, at a lake, in the mountains - we love it all!
We like weekend-exchanges and 1 week to 4 weeks exchanges.
And we are always interested to take care of houses for a longer period of 1 to 3 months. We are very flexible and are not bound to school-holidays. We are open for suggestions, please surprise us!
