Neighbourhood

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area

Fethard-on-Sea is a small village on the Hook Peninsula in 'Ireland’s Ancient East'. It is a nice quiet relaxing area near the sea. The village has restaurants/coffee shops, several pubs, a post office, a small supermarket, pharmacy, hair salon, childrens' playground and the ruins of the 12th century Fethard Castle. There are several craft shops in the locality, a diving centre, horse-riding centre and a golf course. The nearest sandy beach – Grange beach - is 10 minutes walk away, while the beautiful Baginbun and Carnivan beaches are 2.5 km from the cottage.

The Hook Peninsula is a magical place with a rocky coastline, sandy beaches and pretty fishing villages. The area is steeped in history with many heritage sites, castles and abbeys including Tintern Abbey, Dunbrody Abbey, Duncannon Fort etc. The Hook Lighthouse, one of the oldest operational lighthouses in the world, is at the tip of the peninsula.

The waters off Hook Head are rich in marine life and are popular with scuba divers. The adventurous can also try their hand at kayaking, paddle boarding and coasteering. Walking enthusiasts will enjoy some lovely coastal walks with spectacular scenery, especially the cliff walk near the lighthouse. The Tintern Abbey site offers picturesque walking trails and is also home to the wonderful Colclough Walled Garden. A stroll through the 7 acres of the unspoilt and peaceful Kilmokea Gardens is also very rewarding as is wandering through the wonderful John F. Kennedy Memorial Park.
