We are in our early 50's and are both working in Amsterdam. Johanneke (1964) is a lecturer in Media Studies at Hogeschool Amsterdam. René (1968) is a webcoordinator at SOMO, a public interest research institute. Our mutual hobbies include the visual arts, yoga and meditation. Even though we are city dwellers, we feel deeply connected with nature. Our favourite passtime is hiking through forests and mountains. We have done many home exchanges over the last 10 years, across Europe. In 2020 we moved into a new beautiful home, close to our old apartment. After extensive renovations, we are now ready to share it with you!

Read More...Dear Johanneke & René, thank you so much for your hospitality! We had a great time in Amsterdam in your tasteful apartment with the stunning view over the city. We couldn't have met it better: Close to the city, but quiet in a very exciting area with a lot of fascinating modern architecture. We nearly felt like locals when we drove by your bikes criss-cross the city of Amsterdam which offers so much more interesting places than the (nice) canals. We appreciated so much to be close to all shopping facilities and furthermore reach the countryside and the sea in half an hour by bike. And there are so many fascinating museums that rainy days are no problem at all. It couldn't have been better: What a wonderful holiday time in the Netherlands. We can deeply recommend your place: Great place, great city and wonderful hosts. Dankeschön! Anne & Klaus

The location near to the Borneo and the east end harbour area, with its channels, bridges and houses next to the water was worth the visit just for it allone. Amsterdam city, the wind mills, the cheese...We got a totally new view from Holland. Thanks again, and maybe again? Who knows! Dogs seem to miss you already. Hans, Laura, Markus and Maria.

We felt immediately at home in Rene and Johannekes stunning apartment that overlooks the whole of Amsterdam. We loved the area which was incredibly quiet yet just a few minutes walk from shops and lovely places to eat and have coffee. Amsterdam is city that at times seems overwhelmed by tourists and yet here we were able to explore the waterways and streets just as the locals do, we even took to the bikes one day! Rene and Johanneke were perfect hosts and guests and we thank them for giving us this wonderful exchange.

The house is very comfortable and elegant and the view over Amsterdam is just breathtaking. The area is very nice and if you are interested in urbanism and architecture this place is for you. You will find everything necessary in the shopping center nearby and there are plenty of trams and buses to take you to the center of the town. Our hosts prepared everything for us to feel at homel, a light meal with a bottle of wine, fresh beds and towels, books about the area and a very complete instructions file. They were also perfect guests leaving our house spotless clean and they even prepared a fresh bed for our return ! They were very communicative about arrival and departure. This was a wonderful exchange and we recommend René and Johanneke warmly

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area
The Eastern Harbour District is a residential area just outside the city centre. It is relatively quiet and very convenient. Shops can be found within 100 m from our house, a choice of good and affordable restaurants within a 500 m radius, several museums, a famous club (Panama) at hand and easy access to the city centre and several parks by bike or public transport.
Public transport runs every 10-12 minutes from our street in several directions, straight to Amsterdam Central Station (10 mins) or Leidseplein (20 mins). By bike you can comfortable cycle to Dam Square in 15 minutes.
The Eastern Harbour District is a must see for fans of urban architecture. It's also excellent for sunbathing and swimming - right across the street on the quayside, there's a long stretch of jetty where locals go for their daily swim during the summer. And if you are desperate to escape the city, there's the Flevopark at 5 mins cycling or picturesque Durgerdam and Waterland polders (20 mins by bike).

Our home exchange - places to go and things to do while staying in our home
Where to start? There is just so much to see in Amsterdam. Reserve at least a day or two for Amsterdam-East to discover its many hip espresso bars and restaurants, the famours Brouwerij 't IJ (a brewery in an old windmill) and the excellent genever and liquor distillery in the Flevo Park. Walk or cycle across the nearby residential islands with their special architecture and visit the Scheepvaart museum (Maritime Museum) on your way downtown. Or venture a little bit further, for a great bike ride to picturesque Durgerdam. We can give you some great insiders tips if you want.

Our home exchange - here are our Preferences and House Rules
We are looking for a non-smoking house or apartment in a quiet location. Preferably the bedroom should have twin beds or enough room to add an extra mattress or bed, because unfortunately we have difficulty sleeping in one bed.
We will take very good care of your house and we expect you to do the same. Please respect our neighbours (no parties or loud music) and only smoke outside.
