Karen (born 1964) is from Scotland, has lived in Germany since 1988 and works in the German office of a British company. Arndt (born 1965) teaches English and History at a Cologne grammar school. We moved to Hürth in 2013 and love our spacious bungalow, having previously lived in Hennef for 15 years. We have now had 3 exchanges with this house (we had 27 swaps with our Hennef house). We have been members of Homelink since 2003.
We both enjoy travelling, walking, cycling, reading, films, museums and art galleries, good food and wine, visiting interesting cities and lovely countryside. When we moved here, Arndt got the home cinema he has wanted for ages.
We don't have pets, but would be happy to look after some types of pet.
In addition to the languages mentioned, we also have some basic Spanish and Italian.

Comfortable large bungalow near Cologne/Bonn/Rhine valley with 4 double bedrooms + 3 bathrooms.
Ground floor: large, bright living room/diner with wood-burning stove, A/C, TV/DVD, French doors to covered patio (patio furniture + 3 person whirlpool) + garden; new kitchen, master bedroom with A/C, en-suite w. separate floor-level shower, bath, WC, bidet; guest WC; library/snug;
Basement: large study/home cinema, TV/DVD; gym suite w. TV/DVD + large sauna, shower, separate WC + 2 sofa beds; large utility room with double Belfast sink, washing machine and tumble dryer; 2 sheila maids for indoor drying.
Upstairs: 3 double bedrooms (2 with TV + A/C) + family bathroom (shower over bath).
WiFi throughout. English (all Freesat) TV channels, other languages, too. Netflix, Amazon Prime. Extensive library/DVD collection. Underfloor heating on ground floor and part of basement (gym/sauna suite), other rooms with radiators.
We have a long single garage with shed space for our 4 bikes at the back and space in the drive for 2 - 3 cars. BBQ + gardening stuff in shed.

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area
Hürth-Fischenich is near Cologne and Bonn with good public transport and road links to both, and has its own good local amenities for shopping (ALDI and bakery/café in walking distance, small shopping centre with supermarket/butcher, ALDI, Lidl etc. < 2 km + larger mall in Hürth 3 km).
There are some small lakes locally, good for walks, cycling and watersports.
Cologne and Bonn are historic cities and parts of the Rhine valley nearby are scenically beautiful. Cultural activities include cathedrals, palaces, castles, theatres. Fun activities include swimming/spas, theme parks.
Good access to airports (Cologne/Bonn + Düsseldorf) + ferry ports (Rotterdam/Ijmuiden < 3 h, Zeebrugge 3 h, Calais < 4h). As you can probably see from the map, our garden is next to a tram/regional train line. Late at night, however there is only one tram per hour. The sound of the trams/trains doesn't bother us, but we wanted to point this fact out for your information. The tram stop is 5 minutes' walk away.

Our home exchange - here are our Preferences and House Rules
For longer swaps we're limited to school holidays: German sch. hols. for our area: http://www.schulferien.org/NRW/nrw.html. For 2023 we're looking for a approx. two week summer. Also weekend exchanges possible, e.g. Ascension and Corpus Christi long weekends.
We don't have pets but are willing to look after some types of animals. In past swaps we have looked after cats, chickens, Indian running ducks, fish.
We sometimes swap cars, too, although for UK swaps, we usually take our own car. We have a 2009 Honda Jazz (stick shift).
