Our Home For Exchange

Description of the home we are offering for exchange

Charming one bedroom apartment in medieval village, one hour from Nice.
The apartment is located on the third and fourth floors of a house dating from the 17th century. The house stands above the Var River next to the old drawbridge that is the main entrance into the village. During the day you can look down at the river, at night you hear its soft sounds. The living room and kitchen are on the third floor, the bedroom and bathroom are on the fourth floor.
The living room features oak ceiling beams, built-in cabinets, a marble fireplace and the traditional tile tile floor of Provence. It is furnished with antiques, contains a TV, radio and a good amount of books in English, German and French including dictionaries. The sofa pulls out into a comfortable queen-size bed. Two large windows face south and give a view of the river, the plaza and the mountainside across from it.
The kitchen is small but equipped with all modern conveniences: refrigerator/freezer, dishwasher, washing machine, stove and baking oven.
The bedroom is very cozy with its damask covered walls. It has two twin beds.
The bathroom with its small pink and gray features the typical deep European bathtub with a shower attachment.
All windows have double panes.
It is ideal for 2 people but with the pull out sofa in the living room, 2 children would also have a place to sleep.

Neighbourhood

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area

Entrevaux is a very special place. Not only is it a historic village, it is also located in a dramatic landscape. Built on a huge rock, it is surrounded on three sides by the Var River. On the fourth side rises a steep cliff upon which stands the citadel that was built during the reign of Louis XIV. An impressive rampart leads up to it and from there one has a spectacular view of the Var valley.
The houses of Entrevaux crowd behind a well-preserved wall. There are three drawbridges: the Porte Royale which is the main entrance into the town, the Porte d’Italie leading to Italy and the Porte de France and there are three streets, connected by a multitude of narrow walkways, which all lead to a well-preserved church dating from the 12th century. The breath of history clings to this village because the citizens of Entrevaux have altered little. The fountains, arches, balconies, ancient doors and narrow stairways have not changed over the centuries. At the same time Entrevaux is a living, vibrant town with excellent restaurants, coffee shops and stores.
There are many opportunities for hiking, the Var River offers rafting and kayaking and there is a lake nearby for swimming and boating. The Mediterranean is an hour’s drive away. Nice, Antibes, Cannes, Monte Carlo are all fun places to visit but it is a relief to get back to the peace and quiet of Entrevaux at night, drink a glass of wine by the open window and listen to the Var rush by.
If you are interested in the outdoors, in history or would just like to enjoy life in the French countryside with its festivals, wine and food, Entrevaux has something for everybody. Nature and man have truly worked together here to create a unique place in a dramatic setting.

I wrote a short, humorous book about my experiences in France which is available on Amazon. "Thyme in Provence" by Christel Detsch
