It was in the summer of 2006 that we were visiting Altja for the first time. Just bumped into this little village. Not knowing what to expect we walked down the small sand road towards the fisherman’s shed.
We sat down in the grass watching the sun set. Than at a sudden I heard a song. A song written by a Danish-Dutch couple named Nina & Frederik back in the sixties. I knew that song, it was one of my dad and moms’ favorites. Must have been about ten years old or so. Never heard that song again since then. “Listen to the Ocean”.
I became emotional and made an impulsive promise to build a house at this beautiful spot, and would name it after my late dear mother Cornelia. And so we did……
“Cornelia” home is a private house and has been built by me and my wife from composing the first architectural drawing till mounting the last curtain rod. Therefore it has a very special place in our heart. We are in love with this house and with the fantastic surroundings. Sea, deep forests, and total quietness. Nothing more to wish for..
We like to come in contact with people who love and respect nature and would like to spend one/two week(s) in Altja to explore the beauty of Lahemaa Park.

Description of our neighbourhood and surrounding area
Estonia is a low populated small country (1.5 million people at the size of The Netherlands), where the country side is pure nature and not spoiled by noisy amusement parks and high tech attractions yet. Time has stand still in Lahemaa Park. There is a lot to see and much to do, that will keep you as a nature lover occupied for more than a week. It is the largest protected park in Estonia and one of the biggest in Europe. It’s located in Northern Estonia 90 kilometers east from the capital Tallinn. The area covers 700 km². Forests are covering more than 70 percent of Lahemaa. The area is rich in flora and fauna. The park hosts the three most beautiful Manor Houses in Estonia, and many breathtaking walking trails. Wildlife, includes a population of foxes, boar, moose, and deer.
Estonia has a land climate which means cold winters and warm summers. Real winter months are January and February, temperature may fall below -15 degrees Celsius for a few weeks with lots of snow. There is no real spring like in Western Europe. After 1st of May temperature jumps from around zero to +20 degrees in just one week time. June, July and August are often warm or even hot. The autumn starts in September and last until the end of November. The forests are at this period most beautiful, of course.
